Skippy Sanchez Posted January 15, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 15, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Over a year ago I purchased a very nice, used MP with a Leicavit from Tony Rose at PopFlash Photo for what I considered to be an extremely fair price. I had noticed the Leicavit wasn't functioning properly, and Tony apologized sincerely and offered to take care of everything. I sent it to him, he sent it to Leica for repair with a Pro Rush request, & I had it back within two weeks. I primarily shoot M8s, so mostly I use film cameras for high-speed needs. In May of 2007 I was using the MP in Honduras and the Leicavit locked the camera up solid. (Funny to bring a film camera to back up M8s only to have the film camera crap out.) Tony again came to the rescue & sent it to Leica for repair. Sunday, again the Leicavit locked up the camera. And although Tony is under no warranty obligation, he has again offered to run interference for me with Leica to get it repaired. The man is a saint, but I don't think I'll be using the Leicavit once I get it back.

peter_n Posted January 16, 2008 Share #3 Posted January 16, 2008 Typical Tony. I've bought a number of things from him and he's excellent. With respect to winders you should consider the Rapidwinder from Tom Abrahamsson. Visit RapidWinder.com and click on "Rapidwinder" in the left navigation. I have two Leicavits and two TA Rapidwinders (don't ask!) and to be honest there is no comparison. The Rapidwinder has far fewer moving parts and is very rugged in comparison to the Leicavit. The only disadvantages are you can't use it with lenses that have normal focusing rings (i.e. no tab), it will not take a standard-sized Arca-Swiss compatible QR plate on the bottom, and it is heavy. But Tom provides a lifetime warranty on the product which transfers to the new owner if you sell it. I also use his Rapidgrips which are excellent too. [i've no connection with Tom - just a happy customer.]
Skippy Sanchez Posted January 17, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted January 17, 2008 With respect to winders you should consider the Rapidwinder from Tom Abrahamsson..... I have heard good things about the Rapidwinder, and if I shot more film, I would probably score one. The only reason I have the Leicavit is that it came with the MP when I got it from Tony. It's handy, but I doubt I'll use it once it gets back from repair. Three lockups after three repairs in one year and less than a dozen rolls of film has made me kinda goosey about using it again.
