Brian Roy from Leica just got back to me. Apparently its a glitch they are aware of and plan on addressing it soon.

I’m a leicaphile, I have the original Q, SL2-S and Leica lenses, love them, but this is astonishing. Because of the latest Q3/43 software upgrade you can’t rotate the camera and get portrait mode on the screen?! Does this issue extend to the Q3?

Yes it affects both cameras. So far I haven’t spotted any differences in bug reproducibility between the Q3 28 and Q3 43

Thanks Haelio,

I was seriously considering trading in my Q for the Q3/28 in the new year but I will definitely leave it now until this issue is fixed and has satisfied the user base. I don’t have much confidence in Leica’s own testing of software releases these days.
There was a schoolboy error (a couple of years ago?) when Leica added to the function of the SL2-S back-button but, simultaneously, removed its ability to zoom in while focusing with M lenses and didn’t mention it until the complaints flooded in.
I have no idea how they conduct their testing of this stuff but I won’t perform an update until the majority on LUF give it the thumbs up.
Cheers, thanks again.

Of all the criteria for changing from a Q to the Q3, the one red line is that you can't view portrait images in portrait mode? Tough crowd.

FWIW, the SL3-S after the upgrade does do this auto-rotate.

Internet search:

Almost every camera manufacturer has had an issue with firmware at some point. Many experienced users advise waiting a few weeks after a new firmware release before installing it to ensure any potential bugs are discovered and addressed by early adopters or the manufacturer.

As a dealer I can confirm this..,Leica is no worse than any of them.  It shouldn’t stop you from upgrading your Q…instead don’t install firmware upgrades immediately…which is something we’ve told our customers for years.

Hi. According to this video it works, at least with the Q3 28 (at minute 28:08). I just tried it again with my Q3 43, no rotation. Are there differences between the Q's?
