The current silver and black 50 summilux' esthetically falls short for me, the safari adds esthetics and the just released glossy black is beautiful.  I ordered the glossy black and cancelled when finding it is the reissue.  My current 50's include a superb ver. 2, it is a lens that is the rare perfectly centered mechanically aligned lens and the glossy black is disappointingly redundant.  Long story short (too late?) the safari is ordered.

That was an unexpected announcement.

Summilux 50/1.4 black paint on brass ; immediately ordered !

Hate myself now for becoming such a fashion victim.

I wonder if (and doubt that) the glossy black 50 is indeed made of brass, even though the press release does mention the brass underneath. Weight stated on the website is the same for the silver (which surely is made of aluminium?) and the glossy black versions. The recent glossy black noctilux 50 was black paint on aluminium too.

The silver version is made from brass.

Well that explains it! Thanks. That makes it much more interesting, I never really got the glossy black aluminium noctilux, but this one in brass is nice.

The 11714 is brass -  very much heavier in the hand than the black chrome on aluminium v3 pre-aspherical at 275g. The silver pre-aspherical on brass weighs in at 380g.

I think we can thanks the accountants for these specials. Based on forum postings, it seems the recent close focus FLE lenses have been slow to sell; similarly the 50 summilux classic re-imagining, which was launched with little fanfare. Limited edition status should ensure Leica gets a quick cash flow injection, from already produced lens cells.

I don’t think any of them are limited editions, just ‘special edition’ whatever that’s worth. Looks like the glossy black 50 is a regular part of the ‘Classic Line’ now.

A glossy black on brass 35mm Summilux steel-rim or similar, with 0.7m close focus, next in the line please ? Safari green also ?

Wow, some really beautifull new glasses, just before Xmas…..
But I will stay with the silverchrom 50mm brass-made Summilux ASPH on the M11-p Safari.
Green is nice but not too much, for me, there should be some contrast/difference in colors.
But his is only my personal taste…..

I don’t like the look of the current versions of the 35 and 50 Lux. Too short and fat.

I might get the glossy black paint Lux. Since the Safari and the lens are both brass, they could wear nicely together.

I’m just in the middle of acquiring a silver 35 Lux FLE. The dealer messaged me and asked if I wanted to change my mind. However I can’t see much value in buying the Safari 35 for 39% more. It’s not 39% better.

A Safari 35 Apo on the other hand….!

Are these limited availability colours or production?

That’s nice. I don’t think I’ve seen a chrome one before.
