Parolibre Posted 19 hours ago Share #1 Posted 19 hours ago Advertisement (gone after registration) Greetings fellow Leica users! I have an upcoming trip to Egypt for 12 days, where I will be visiting Cairo, Aswan, Luxor and Hurghada. Currently I have a SL-3 paired with APO 35 Summicron SL ASPH - and I am thinking either getting one more prime lens, or the 24-90/24-70. Would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on what lens should i purchase for this trip. Thank you in advance!

SolarChronicle Posted 18 hours ago Share #3 Posted 18 hours ago I'd get the 24-70 and leave the rest. One and done, and it already covers your 35 Summicron.

LD_50 Posted 17 hours ago Share #5 Posted 17 hours ago The lens selection should be dependent on what and how you shoot. I typically decide that first and then pack the appropriate lens. The difference between 70 and 90 shouldn’t make much difference if you plan for it. If you only packed the 35 you’d be limited in some ways but that can inspire creativity. I carried only the 35 APO for a lot of my last overseas trip and “seeing” in one focal length helps me produce better results than what I often get with a zoom. The zoom is nice for more casual outings or where I know I need the wide or long end.

If you believe that you will use a zoom lens also after the Egypt trip then it's ok to buy one. After many years with Nikkor zooms i am not anymore a huge fan of zoom lenses and i prefer very wide over tele lenses and crop if needed, but thats me. However i agree that they are handy, will reduce lens changes with hypothetic dust entering and can make a good always-on, every day lens if length and weight is not a issue. I find a high quality tele converter a very useful, small and light tool for travelling and encountering scenes where a tele would be handy. SL3+35mmAPO+TC would be a awesome small and light travel setup. Should the 35mm Summicron APO Asph not be able to work reasonable well or not at all with a TC then disregard that. dem331 Posted 15 hours ago Share #7 Posted 15 hours ago Advertisement (gone after registration) For this trip I would take the 24-90 and a small fast lens (in my case usually the M 50mm Summilux) for the rare occasion when I want/need something lighter/faster (and as back-up). I have been on numerous “similar” 2/3 week trips (Utah/Arizona National Parks or Crete for example) and shot almost exclusively with the 24-90. In fact I would part with my APO lenses before parting with the 24-90. Also, looking through my pictures there is no particular focal length that I favour when using the 24-90. On some trips, I tend to go wider and on others longer, and I really don’t know why.

You've got 60mp at your disposal so cropping in can make up that 20mm. You'll save a lot of $$$$ too with the 24-70.
