For me..... A camera is a tool with which to make images and (for professional photographers) money.  Period.  For me .... a collectable is something one acquires to look at, admire and preserve for its future value.  For me... unless a "collectable" has uniqueness by virtue of limited production, capability or provenance, it's just hoarding. For cameras specifically, unless it's unique (reasons above) and unused (Leicas come sealed and boxed) or used, with special provenance, it has no "collectable" value. If it's sitting and depreciating, and not being used for its intended purpose, it's hoarding for hoarding's sake.  All that said - if you own something you should do anything you want with it.  In 99% of the time, your money put into expensive cameras, that are not being used for photography, is a losing proposition and your money would grow much more by proper investments and CDs than in old (or new) camera equipment.

  • 2 weeks later...

Neither is going to go up in value. The only somewhat recent camera that went up is the M10-R black paint. Last one with a bottom plate, and the only one (aside from the M10 monochrome) with a 48 mp sensor, producing some very nice colors. Not a real limited edition but still hard to find for a reasonable price.
