I'm going to purchase in the next few days a 1DMarkIII to use with my Canon gear along with my R9/DMR combo. I would also like to use my Leica R lenses with the MarkIII via adapter. My only doubt is about the Vario-Elmarit-R 28-90 f/2.8-4.5 ASPH. Have any of you tried this combination? Any mirror clearance issues? Sorry if this question has been asked before.

Thanks-

Thanks for the help, Joe, but I'm asking about the 1D not the 1Ds. I already know that the 28-90 won't work with FF cameras like the 5D or 1Ds without mirror modification. The 1D has a 1.3 crop factor sensor and then, I suposse, a smaller mirror but I can`t know if it's small enough for working without problems with the 28-90.

Please read this page! (a different link than the one previously mentioned with the same name.)

Pebble Place

They do not recommend removing the shroud from the lens, you're likely to loose a spring which is held in place by the shroud.

One lens on the site list which has little compatability data is the 35-70mm 2.8 ASPH vario-Elmar-R 11275, mine has worked well on the 1Ds and 5D by removing the rear shield. After removing the shield you can replace the retaining screws for safe keeping. The shield can be replaced at any time if needed.

If I remember correctly another lens without data, the 35mm 4.0 PA Curtagon-R 11202, worked on my 1Ds and 5D without modification.

Bob.

Yes, I have tried this on my 1DMKIII. No, it won't work.

Remove the rear shroud at your own peril.

IMHO, it is not worth monkeying around with such an expensive lens to use with a stopped down metering, variable aperture lens on a crop frame 10 meg Canon that isn't up to capturing what the optic is capable of.

Thanks for your help, Bob, Marc.

Of course I'm going to use the MarkIII primarily with my set of Canon lenses. And, you're right, Marc: no way to modify such an expensive lens as the 28-90 just for playing around a bit. I'll only use the ones that will work with the MarkIII without any problems.
