Leica lenses offer a look’ is it really that different from a Nikon or Canon lens used on the same camera and in the same circumstances? I have used Leica, Nikon, Canon, Pentax & Konica. Looking back through my library (20 years) some Leica images do stand out. In certain circumstances other lenses offer a look’ - Having used M cameras and quite a few other film and digitals, I like the consistency of Leica glass, yes, they cost more, in most instances they last longer and can be used with adapters on multiple cameras, giving the Leica Look’ …. 🍷

Thanks for showing some intelligence on the subject…!

You say this because?

Leica manufacturers cameras and lenses mostly by hand.  Their lenses do cost quite a bit more because of stringent craftsmanship and qualified workers.  There are lenses that only one craftsman (woman) can assemble…!

The other day I was crossing the road whilst out shooting with my M7. A woman crossing in the opposite direction said to her companion, "Look, its a real film camera, it's a Leica!"

So now, I know what the real Leica Look is! 😍

Pretty embarrassing to knock Leica on their own forum…🥸

not at all, pretty common here, except for a small group of fanboys gushing all the time typing while holding tissue paper...and according to the admin, a few people from leica do read some threads on this site

I can’t even make sense of this.

This forum exists for all things Leica - the good, of which there is plenty and then all of the problems. There are plenty of those. You want to pretend they don’t exist? This is not like some pure advertising message board.

Ok, let’s twist this around a bit! With Canon and Nikon glass and cameras I had 25-30% keepers. With Leica glass 45% creep into my keeper files.. Long live the Red Dot 😎…

This forum is not owned by Leica, but even if it was, my 40 years worth of Leica purchases gives me full rights to call out their failings and to remind readers that most of what we like about the brand can’t be quantified scientifically.

In the past decade other makers have matched or exceeded Leica performance at a much lower cost. Leica has raked in cash while still selling a $2600 50mm f2 lens designed in the 70’s.

(Consider that Voigtlander is on the third version of their 50 1.2 in less than a decade.  They are simply trying harder. )

I enjoy the brand, but I won’t fool myself into believing everything they make is the best in its class.

All lenses are crafted by hand, even cheap ones made of plastic.  Robots are not capable of that work yet.

BTW Leica farms out a fair amount of the manufacturing of things like helicoids and glass. Also, just so you are aware 😉, Cosina does all their own manufacturing INCLUDING the glass.

I've fired up the old 27 inch Mac to have the best look at the pic I can give it. I'm really not seeing any magic pixie dust sprinkled over the image here at all. It could have been taken with any competent camera/lens combo. The only 'look' I'm seeing is the vision and creativity that you've put into making a really gorgeous image.

I hope this is coming across as being on the other side of a discussion and not some inherent anti Leica position. I love my Leica gear for what is to me, a very real Leica feel and I'm quite happy to have paid the premium for them, when I've been able to.

Do you see micro details without excessive sharpness…?

Remember,  you’re seeing the JPEG not the DNG RAW…📷
