Hey guys,

Quick one, as i can't seem to find any direct comparison between both: is there any compelling reason, to your knowledge, to grab, in 2025, a used Lumix S 50mm f1.4 Pro over a new Sigma 50mm f1.2, knowing i shoot stills and now video with a Lumix camera?

Are there, for example, certain functions that only work with Lumix lenses in spite of the L mount alliance?

Has anyone used both and would care to share his/her experience?

Thank you very much!

Hello NicoX,

here is a youtube link with both lenses, but it is of german

I bought the panasonic s-pro used at the end of last year (it looks likes new). It was significant cheaper than the Sigma 1,2.

I am happy with this lens, the Summilux is too expansive for me, because i don't use 50 mm that often.

I find it is sharp and has a nice bokeh.

Best regards

Christian

Hello All,

I owned the Panasonic S-Pro 50mm for nearly six years and replaced it with the Sigma 50mm 1.2 last fall.

The Panasonic is a terrific lens with outstanding image quality for both portraits and landscapes which implies that it has edge to edge performance in addition to terrific bokeh and separation for close distances.. it does!  Its autofocus is also very good.

Why did I replaced it with the Sigma?

The Panasonic is very large and heavy.  It size, with its lens hood (reversed), took up as much space in my backpack is my zoom lenses or tilt/shift lenses (with adapters).  Based on the kind of shooting I was doing, I found myself leaving it behind...if I had only one objective where I would bring it, it was (and is) stellar.

The Sigma astonished me with what it is able to do with its size and weight.  Optically, I find it to be the equal to the Panasonic for my purposes, which include printing to 17X22 and beyond.  The F1.2 compared to F1.4 surely adds some additional bokeh "goodness" for certain images; however, that was not my reason for switching.  The fact that it is lighter and has great performance means that it is always in my backpack when the opportunity arises.......the AF is excellent as well.

Here is an image I took recently with the Sigma...at F1.2...you can see the bokeh effect as well as overall great optical quality.  Would the Panasonic be close enough at F1.4? Probably...but would I have had the lens with me?

Net/net: the Panasonic is a terrific performer now available at excellent pricing.  The Sigma is also terrific and just easier to live with.

My two cents for what they are worth.

As  @georgecp  wrote.
By today lens choices. I should go for the  Sigma 50mm/F1.2  over the  Lumix S Pro 50mm/F1.4  just by the size and weight advantage.
(The Lumix S Pro 50mm/F1.4  I found it always to bulky and expensive).

In 2023 I bought the  Sigma 50mm/F1.4  model.  "to early".  (I bought it as a Lumix 50mm/F1.8 model, that copy was faulty / decentered).
As one year later the  Sigma 50mm/F1.2  arrived.

The Sigma 50mm/F1.2 has better  LoCA  correction than the 50mm/F1.4 model. (Better close-focus sharpness and less distortion to).
As can be seen by the more early posted YouTube video  < as by this time start moment >

In spite the LoCA of the 50mm/F1.4  model can be corrected more or less by today’s software options.
I am thinking to replace the Sigma 50mm/F1.4 in favour of the Sigma 50mm/F1.2
The size and weight of the Sigma 50mm/F1.2  even is a tad more light.

I think the  Sigma 50mm/F1.2  quality is a real gem, as by today lens choices.

Check another lens test by Christopher Frost of the Sigma 50mm/F1.2

versus  (check e.g. LoCA - close-focus sharpness and distortion uncorrected)
