I bought my Q3 used and in mint condition. When I was discussing purchasing and trying to get a deal the camera the store offered Leica's charging plate, charging grip, leather case and an 256GB SD card for an extra £100. I have to say that whilst the charging plate and grip are a bit meh and rarely used, the case is excellent, it adds just enough grip to stop me looking for a thumb rest, the camera feels really nice in my hand.

But.....

The case is a pain at the end of the day when I get back to base and want to down load the images onto the computer, whilst the case allows access the battery you have to remove the case to get to the USB port or the memory card slot, which make the whole process a bit of a faff, IMHO not a user friendly design.

Ultimately I will get another half case for the Q3, but it will have to allow me access to both the battery and memory card slots but for now I'll persevere with the one I have.

My suggestion would be to look around and see what is available, a good case isn't cheap but for me it works very well.

I use the Leica half case. I like the feel of the textured leather and the extra protection when I place the Q2 on hard surfaces.

No need to bulk up the camera with a grip IMO.

Unfortunately the case needs to be removed to access the SD card and some users report scratching to the camera base.

Thats true, but the extra step (5 more seconds really) of removing the case every couple of days to unload the photos and charge/change the battery is not really a concern. The experience of actually using the camera or carrying it around the neck is greater when there is no extra bulk. Regarding the scratches, I've been using the case for about two years, I have hiked mountains, crossed rivers, etc, my Q2 is still like new.

I don't even use a camera bag most of the time either, just a Leather pouch with suede interior or the Leica Ettas pouch.

When I got my Q2, I bought a half case with SD/Battery access (well regarded maker among the peers here), and found out that extra leather flap on the bottom just added to the bulk (visually and functionally). I sent it back, got the Leica Half Case, and never looked back. The extra 5 seconds it takes to remove the case is not really that much, and quite reminiscent of the plate on all M cameras until the M11 variants.

I accept that it doesn't take but a few moments to remove the case from the camera to get the memory card out or access the ports but I would ask - should you have to?

Access to some of the key ports along with the battery wouldn't go amiss in a case that costs £215. If I hadn't been offered the accessories at such a good price I certainly would have looked elsewhere for a case, and will do so when the time is right.

I ordered the Leica half case but sent it right back from whence it came!

I have used a half case for the last 6 years on both the Q2 and Q3.  Mine came from China (purchased on Etsy) and has a small bump grip area on the front.  I prefer the half case for the additional grip and protection of the camera's edges and covered area.  When I sold my Q2, the body was nearly perfect in large part due to the half case.

The current half case I use only has access to the battery.  It is not a problem as I rarely remove the SD card.  I transfer photos to my computer using the USB port or to my phone/tablet via the Fotos app.   Whether or not you choose a half case, I strongly recommend addding a protective glass screen protector over the LCD screen.

I'll have to have a look on Etsy for a case as direct access to the USB port would make life easier, however easy access to the memory card slot would be better still.

I used half-case on my Q2 and now also on my Q3s and find them useful. Bought them from Alibaba for $12 shipped. Very well made with a small bump in the front the helps with the grip. The bottom of these cases can be lifted up to access battery and SD card, so no need to remove the case itself.

If the halfcase being offered to you is free or close to free, then why think, just take it.

It never annoyed me, and in return is cleaner aesthetically and doesn't add as much bulk as the cases with flaps on the bottom - as they practically need to have two bottoms - as they make the camera taller.

We don't have to agree, as I'm clearly the minority on that regard, at least on this forum.

Mine (and others i have seen for the Q3) has full access to the USB port. I don't think the Q2 has a USB port, only the Q3.

I like half cases on M and Q cameras. I had an Artisan and Artist half case on my Q2, and I liked that a lot. It was nothing super fancy, but it was well made and just worked. I have an Arte di Mano case for my M10M, and that is extremely well made. It was, however, quite expensive. In the past I have had Luigi cases, and I did like them a lot. He was a wonderful person to buy from. I ordered one for the M10M, however, and I was not as happy with it, as the leather strip at the top covered part of the display. In this case, I think the Arte di Mano design is better, and to be honest the construction fit and finish is quite a bit better too.
