The camera manual does not appear to explain the shutter speed dial marking of 1+.  I wish to set 10, 15 or 30 seconds for an astro image and cannot work out how to set the shutter.  I am using mechanical shutter and also find I cannot set any manual shutter speed less than 1/30th second.  Also, on Auto ISO the shutter sped option is greyed out.  I have tried to set the shutter speed using various ISOs but still no joy.  This line of camera has been in production for a number of years and it is frustrating that the manual is, in many respects, poor.  I think I have a reasonable understanding of cameras and pity a beginner purchasing this camera thinking it is a simple 'point and shoot'.

Thanks EV.  I tried your suggestion to no avail last night and wasted a couple of hours trying different profiles etc and gave up.  I then spent several hours on a train trip,  with the manual on my iPhone, and discovered on Page 55 that the Thumbwheel needed to be on Auto to set shutter in S or M.  Again wasted time as no result when I selected that.  Fortunately last night was not suitable for my astro shot but I have to master this aspect of the camera.  I am sure it is something simple that has been selected within my settings that is blocking me and also not allowing me to set the shutter speed for auto ISO.  Someone on this forum says that it this is a simple camera.  It is not, it is a very powerful camera when used properly and to achieve this power there are complications with the use of the menu system.  I am determined to get on top of this simple problem before the camera takes a flight out of my 6th floor window.  I'll let you know if I have a breakthrough or I took the window option.

Turn the shutterspeed dial to +1. Then press menu button to enter status view.

Tap on shutter speed showing +1 (instead of 1/2000 in the picture).

Now you can set longer shutterpeeds with left and right arrows in directional pad.

Thank you for your suggestion.  I did exactly what you suggest and instead of showing 1+ in the status menu my view says 1/30 which does not respond to a tap.  I am beginning to think that my camera has a fault.  However, when I set it to 1/2000 on the dial and then tap 1/2000 on the status screen I can control the shutter speed in the high speed range.  Can you send me a photo of your status screen showing shutter speed as 1+ please?

Hi

You should see this screen after activating the "S"-section:

Thanks.  It should but it does not.  When I try to move left from ISO the indication jumps left across to MODE. It refuses to stop on S.

Is your touchscreen active or is it deactivated?

A big thank you to those who have tried to help me with my problem.  I have established that it was a camera issue.  How?  I installed the firmware upgrade, and the camera is now behaving.  Now I know you will all tell me that I should have done that in the first place.  But, I do have a reason for not doing that.  I am two months and thousands of kilometres away from home.  And from bitter experience I no longer upgrade anything electronic whilst travelling.  You may not agree with my reason but installing the firmware update was done in desperation with me knowing that I could possibly be without the use of the DLux for the rest of my travels if the firmware update did not go to plan.  Happily it all went smoothly.  I deliberately did not save my settings and will enjoy setting up the camera 'my way' again, it is part of my learning process in remembering where everything is within the menu system.    An DLux8 image from yesterday form the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, as a thank you....

Thanks for feedback.  I was happy with it.  Here is its little sister.

Cheers

I’m on the cusp of buying the D-lux 8, but I’m still confused about long exposure. What is the longest you can open the shutter on this camera?   I would like to dabble in astro photography. Also when paired with your phone can the shutter be released from the phone screen?  Or does it support a wireless shutter release?

Thanks.

I'd say the long exposure capabilities of the DL6 are pretty good up to 1min / 60s. However I cannot comment on the quality of the images as I haven't tried it yet.

There is a "T" mode where you can start and stop the exposure. Pressing the shutter in T-mode when starting and stopping the exposure may invoke some trembling  even on a sturdy tripod which yet may be irrelevant on >60s. Once you started the long exposure I expected a seconds counter on the display like on the Q3. Not so on the DL8. You need a stopwatch. Glad I have my IWC Pilots Chronograph.

You can also use the Fotos app as a remote control. Not a great experience for me, though. Connecting the camera takes (Wifi) roughly 40s (!) then the lens retracts and once you go to photo mode it extends again. Weird behavior. This is much faster on my Q3.

Unfortunately (like the Q3) it does not support a wireless or wired shutter release which is a shame.

Hi Sally, even better news, the manual says mechanical shutter works from 120 seconds to 1/2000 second. Happy long exposuring.  The D-Lux 8 is the best small camera I have ever owned, and that has been many.  It is compact and brilliant for travel.  Its only drawback in my book is the lack of a tilting screen but all the other benefits outweigh that.  Go Buy!  I have often put my pro cameras back in the bag and pulled out the DL8 for tricky lighting shots. Another example below and a couple earlier on this post.
