Is the leaf shutter the reason for no manual or electronic remote release? I can’t think of another reason why a simple cable release wouldn’t work in the threaded shutter or why Leica hasn’t figured out a way to sell us a $400 electronic cable release…… 🤓

The shutter release on my Q3 28 is also threaded but I have read in a couple of places that you cannot activate the shutter with a cable release and the threaded shutter button is only used for soft releases

Am I wrong on this?

Have you tried?

The threaded shutter button is only for the use of a soft shutter release, as has been mentioned Ad infinitum on the form, nor does Leica make an cable electronic release.

Download the Fotos app and you can release the shutter remotely with that.

Back to my original question which I don’t believe has been asked and answered “ad infinitum” - is the reason these cameras don’t have remote shutter releases related to the leaf shutter?

I do use the Fotos app but have found it to be flaky as a remote - my personal experience

Should not be.  The Fuji X100 series have leaf shutters and at least the last few versions can use a wired (electronic) remote release.  My X100f can also use a standard mechanical cable release. (They can also use the Fuji app like the Q3 can use Fotos).  In the pre-electric days cameras/lenses with leaf shutters essentially all had the ability to use remote (cable) releases.

I also find the Fotos app tedious to use for a shutter release:

  • there are occasional connection problems
  • waking your phone, starting the app, choosing your camera, checking the connection and setting up the remote release is most definitely not a step forward in modern technology compared to attaching a small device and pressing a button
  • while you're doing other things to the camera, you have to put your phone somewhere, you can't just let it go, like a cable. Put the phone in your pocket and it may go to sleep, so you could be back to square one.

The Fotos app as a shutter release is one of those dumb tech solutions in search of a problem*, where a simple low tech solution should be readily available.

* The problem it solves is when you are at some distance from the camera and can't see what it's shooting. It doesn't solve the problem of releasing the shutter without touching the camera.

Yup, that about sums it up.

No, a leaf shutter has nothing to do with it. There is an electronic flash trigger for the Godox series of lighting products. The Godox X3-L flash trigger does work TTL or manual on the Q2 and Q3.

As mentioned before, the threaded shutter button does NOT work with a manual flash trigger.
