codeoncoffee Posted April 9 Share #1 Posted April 9 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey All, I've recently acquired an SL2-S and was hoping to use my pretty extensive collection of vintage glass (pretty much full Nikkor AIS line, Minolta, Pentax). I'm moving over from an Panny S1R and have the Sigma EF->L Adapter, as well as a bunch of "dumb" adapters for various other mounts. From what I can see there's no way to enable IBIS for any non-Canon lenses. I expected to have to enter the focal length, which I've done in Lens Profiles, but IBIS is still deactivated. Is there a path forward for me here?
Advertisement Posted April 9 Posted April 9 Hi codeoncoffee, Take a look here IBIS with non-Leica Vintage Glass?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jlinwinter Posted April 10 Share #2 Posted April 10 Do you have the latest firmware? Did you already turn on the image stabilization? You will see a ((o)) icon (waves coming from a square) if it's on. I've been using image stabilization on the SL2 with my "dumb" adapters for M, K lenses. It's a separate option to turn on/off in addition to selecting the lens mm/focal length.
Biotar Posted April 10 Share #3 Posted April 10 Your way of working is the same as mine - the MC-21 runs by selecting automatic - for everything else “stupid” you have to enter a focal length. I have placed this entry on one of the upper function buttons.
codeoncoffee Posted April 10 Author Share #4 Posted April 10 I updated to 6.1.0 this morning from 6.0.0 and reset the camera. Still the same. I can go into Camera Settings > Lens Profiles > 50mm, but the "Image Stabilization" Menu Item is still grayed out.
codeoncoffee Posted April 10 Author Share #5 Posted April 10 Quick Update. I put a "dumb" adapter on and IBIS is working! I get the M / R Selection menu as well. Seems like it's an issue with the Sigma MC-21 adapter. Guess I'll be on the market for another EF-> Adapter. Recommendations welcome!
Photoworks Posted April 11 Share #6 Posted April 11 There is only the Sigma adapter MC-21 But any dumb adapter should work just fine if you select matching R lens setting. It will reactivate IBIS.
Biotar Posted April 11 Share #7 Posted April 11 Advertisement (gone after registration) Are you sure you are using the EF adapter and not the SA adapter with (I think) identical bayonet but different protocol? I have no problems with SL-FW 5.20 and adapter-FW 1.0 The manually set focal length also overrides the automatic focal length of the adapter.
Biotar Posted April 11 Share #8 Posted April 11 So you could try setting the focal length without the adapter and only then attach the adapter.

In other words, the Sigma EF adapter works with EF (electronic) lenses, but not with mechanical lenses that have been adapted to EF. I guess that the camera expects electronic adapters (and lenses) to provide data, which they don't if you are stacking a "dumb" adapter on top of the MC-21. As far as mechanical adapters are concerned, you have three tiers (plus a bonus "S" tier for Leica's own R and M adapters): Best: Novoflex, Kipon, and a few others that sell for over $150 or €150. Good: Urth, Metabones, Fotodiox Pro, and many other brands in the $50 to $150 range Good Enough: Anything sold on Amazon/Ebay for under $50. These are your only option for several historical lens mounts, like Rollei QBM, Praktina, etc. These will be OK most of the time, but they don't mount as precisely (you may need to force things a bit), and they usually aren't well calibrated. For instance, I have a Zeiss 18mm (Y/C mount) where infinity is around the 3m mark with a cheap adapter, but precisely at infinity with a Novoflex adapter. If you really need a mechanical EOS adapter, Urth makes one. However, if your "mechanical" EF lenses are adapted from other mounts you are better-off using an adapter for the original mount. There was a fashion a decade ago for semi-permanently converting lenses to EF. If that's the case with your lenses, hopefully you kept the original parts to convert them back. If not, try the Urth. The MC-21 works automatically with electronic lenses, whereas without contacts for transmission you have to set the focal length manually - just like a stupid adapter.
