There’s a few copy cat versions on Amazon for cheaper too, and build quality feels identical.  Otherwise, they may not be sexy, but the Joby Gorillapods are cheap and pretty strong too.

Yep!

All depends on the size PeterCL wan't to have.
Longer Gorillapods and the one with metals "balls" instead of plastic "balls" are very sturdy and have the advantage to adapt to different surfaces, also vertical ones if a branch, tube, hook, etc is there. I don't like the really small ones with plastic balls while the longer with metal balls and the bigger Jobo Ball Head are great.
