peterm1_Leica Posted February 23 Share #1 Posted February 23 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) (Note please that all of the following is NOT about the later L mount cameras - the SL2, SL2-S etc - only the first type - the typ601. I have posted other threads on this site (and elsewhere) about my attempts to find a suitable electronic adapter for mounting Canon EF mount lenses on a Leica SL. I was repeatedly informed that the ONLY adapter ever made for the SL (typ601) was the (now departed) Novoflex electronic adapter and that no other adapters presently marketed function with it. In the course of my investigations, the only other adapter I managed to test was a Sigma MC 21 adapter and found, as others here had predicted, that while of course it physically mounts, it does not even communicate with the camera having no functionality at all when mounted. I am pleased to be able to report that the statement about the Novoflex being the only electronic adapter that works to be incorrect though perhaps it was correct at some earlier date. The relative newcomer to the scene, URTH (which I believe is Australian based), markets an electronic adapter with the name displayed in the title to this thread. I bought one (slightly reluctantly as I could nowhere find a review of it). But I was given heart by the fact that URTH staff were consistently very helpful, professional and quick to respond when questions were asked. And they also have a 30 day money back guarantee so it seemed to be a safe bet. Upon the item arriving, I quickly tried it and found that it communicated correctly with my Leica SL (insofar as I have been able to find to date - about a week). I did initially have some issues with Image zooming when focusing but this has been sorted. It appears to mainly be because the camera behaves differently depending upon whether a chipped lens or a non-chipped lens is mounted and I was not expecting this to happen (joystick press worked with non chipped / bottom left button worked with chipped). This was eventually sorted out by reassigning buttons on the camera). I mention it only because others might find a similar thing if they mount a chipped lens/adapter having previously only used unchipped legacy glass. Be aware that my only Canon mount lenses are all Zeiss ZE lenses which are chipped but are manual focus only. However, these lenses still require electronic communication with the camera to change lens parameters (Aperture, Program mode, Aperture priority mode etc.) which explains my need for such an adapter. The adapter is well made and appears to be all metal and I have found no problems with this adapter as stated, but I naturally have not tested its AF ability due to a lack of lenses to do so. Having said this, URTH issues a very long and comprehensive list of compatible Canon and Sigma lenses. The length of this list suggests it to be highly compatible with these lens types and may be a worthwhile option for those requiring this functionality to consider buying one. See below regarding compatibility. Note also that this adapter is very specifically made for the Leica SL Typ601 and no other cameras are listed as compatible in the compatibility list. I am posting this here only because the topic of e-adapters for this camera is not well documented on the internet with lots of partial information and potentially misleading information as tends to be the nature of things on camera forums where people often are not inclined to long explanations and often pass on information which is incorrect or has become outdated. (Which is a sin I am certainly guilty of myself). Advertisement Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Hi peterm1_Leica, Take a look here URTH "Canon (EF / EF-S) Lens Mount to Leica L Camera Mount (Electronic)" - Works with Leica SL Typ601!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Biotar Posted February 25 Share #2 Posted February 25 I am pleased that such an adapter is now finally available for the 601 and hope that it can also be adapted for the SL2 via firmware. As I still use my Canon system in addition, I am an extensive user of the MC21 on the SL2-S. Here, however, the adapter always remains on the camera for quick lens changes and I only change the lens without any problems. Does this seem to be a bit more complicated with the Urth?
