Sonnich Posted February 11 Share #1 Posted February 11 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) D-Lux8 live preview of depth of field? Hello! I am totally new in photography and the D-Lux 8 is my first proper camera. I am still trying to get my head around the fundamentals so apologies if this question is dumb...but i been searching around on the forum and on google and i can't find an answer. Is it possible to see the depth of field live in the viewfinder of the D-Lux 8? When i change between values of my aperture i don't see any difference in the viewfinder. Only when i take the picture can i see the result in the final image. I read an article saying that that is normal for many cameras as the camera doesn’t actually apply my chosen aperture until the shutter is released. But then i read that a lot of cameras have a "live view" type of button that lets me see how the depth of field will look in my final image. Does the D-Lux 8 have something similar? Or do i have to shoot test images to see how the final look will be? Edited February 11 by Sonnich

rogxwhit Posted February 11 Share #2 Posted February 11 I don't know how precise you would like your preview to be. It would be hard to be exact owing to the scale & resolution of the viewing medium. Film slr's tended to have a stop-down preview lever or button, but it was of very limited function anyway since stopping down darkened the view! Regardless of camera type, my practice involves a pre-assessment of dof based on prior experience of results - related to format size, focal length of lens, and subject and background distances. In other words, I wing it!
Sonnich Posted February 11 Author Share #3 Posted February 11 thank you for the answer! I suspected that it would be like you said I just remember playing around with a DSLR cam that had a big zoom-lens on it where what i saw in the viewfinder was 1-to-1 identical with my final image regarding DOF
