My Q3 froze into a black screen repeatedly today, showing error message "Macro Ring Not in Correct Position". However, it certainly was in the correct position for regular shooting and clicked firmly into place.

When I move from the dot position to the macro position, the black screen disappears and I can shoot in macro mode. However, it's not as simple as just switching back and forth, because going from macro back to regular doesn't solve the problem, I will still see the black screen. It seems like a short circuit, because it will work intermittently then not work.

I just updated the firmware from 2.0.5 to 3.0 and I am still having the issue, although not as badly.

This camera also freezes up a lot if I shoot in M-DNG or bigger. I mostly shoot S-DNG because I shoot so many files in a given day at work as a wedding photographer.

Any thoughts? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Reset the camera and try a different SD card formatted in camera.

Thanks! I just did that. It seems ok in office, we will see how it does in the field today.

Frankly it sounds like a macro ring contact fault rather than SD card error. I hope I'm wrong, but if not I can't see any solution other than sending it in.

My Q2 and now Q3 43 would show a black screen with that same message if I had not turned the ring fully in either direction.

Unfortunately the issue did persist yesterday, it was not as bad as before loading the new firmware and resetting the camera, but it certainly isn't reliable in the field. I wish I could count on a quick repair but experience tells me I'll be buying another Q 1 2 or 3 to use in the meantime. I'd like to stick with the Q3 because of it's insane ability to not fill up the buffer, but it's a lot of cash out of pocket while I wait on a repair. Bummer.

I had a similar problem with my Q2 in that it wouldn't move into Macro mode and I was getting the same message. It would appear that at some point I must have banged / dropped the Q2 although I couldn't remember doing it.

A trip to Manchester followed and it was confirmed that I had somehow damaged it, off to London it went and £1400 later it was fitted with a new lens unit. Lens was relatively cheap whereas labour costs were something else!!

Mine will move, but it doesn't matter whether or not it's in the correct position. Sometimes, that is. It's not an intermittent problem.
