Advertisement Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Hi Jonas Larsson, Take a look here Leica LUX Grip. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LocalHero1953 Posted February 6 Share #2 Posted February 6 (edited) Based on the Fjorden Grip that Leica bought last year. Fjorden had an app that went with it, and now forms the basis of the Leica Lux app (which I use, in its free version, and like). One of several reviews of the original. The Leica version doesn't look as pocketable, but perhaps easier to hold. Edited February 6 by LocalHero1953
Tarekith Posted February 6 Share #3 Posted February 6 I almost bought that Fjorden grip a few times, didn’t realize Leica bought them. Definitely prefer the slimness of the original though.
dunfr Posted February 6 Share #4 Posted February 6 I've been using the Fjorden Grip, which attaches via a plate and stud for a secure hold. Leica's new LUX Grip uses MagSafe for attachment—convenient but possibly less secure under heavy use. All the promo shots seem to have a 'naked' iPhone. I wonder how well it holds up in real-world shooting with different protection cases. Will the Lux Grip work with other phone camera apps - I use the Fjorden grip with the excellent ProCamera app.

I don't have the Fjorden but I do use the ProCamera App.
dunfr Posted February 6 Share #6 Posted February 6 Assuming the LUX Grip only works with the LUX app. While the grip includes a one-year free Leica LUX Pro subscription, after that, you’ll need to pay £69.99/year or £6.99/month to keep access to Pro features. The free version of the Leica LUX app only includes Automatic Photo Mode, Aperture Mode with a Leica Summilux-M 28mm f/1.4 ASPH simulation, and five Leica Looks for color grading. I use the paid version of the Leica LUX app, and while it offers some nice Leica-inspired looks and lens simulations, the £69.99 per year subscription seems very high compared to other pro camera apps like Halide or ProCamera, which offer similar manual controls at a lower cost or even a one-time purchase. LocalHero1953 Posted February 6 Share #7 Posted February 6 Advertisement (gone after registration) The advantage of the Leica Lux app (free version) for me is that it will record raw on my iPhone 13, which the iOS Camera app does not, nor did Halide when I had it. I haven't tried ProCamera, but I'd have to pay for that!
luetz Posted February 6 Share #8 Posted February 6 I have been using the Fjorden Grip in conjunction with the Leica Lux app (subscription) for about 6 mths. I agree that the new Leica version does not look as user friendly for carrying(full time) as the Fjorden, but does not require the adapter plate(different for various iPhone models). Personally, I will stick with Fjorden for its compact size. Fjorden's future unknown....
dunfr Posted February 6 Share #9 Posted February 6 The Fjorden Grip was first announced through a Kickstarter campaign in July 2021. Following a successful campaign, the initial units began shipping to backers around November 2022. The grip has not changed since then - firmware upgrades are extremely rare. Nonetheless, I will be keeping my Fjorden grip for the time being- especially with small form factor and light weight.

IkarusJohn Posted February 6 Share #11 Posted February 6 Interesting - haven't seen any prices yet as I get a 404 Error when I click on the shop online button.

IkarusJohn Posted February 7 Share #13 Posted February 7 (edited) It has come up on the local Leica website for NZD 549, but “Sold Out” and on “Back Order”. Leica seems to use Sold Out as a general indication that the item is not yet available, which is a bit odd. By Leica standards, the price isn’t too bad (perhaps I’ve become inured to their pricing policy). Edited February 7 by IkarusJohn
rjans Posted February 8 Share #14 Posted February 8 The website (Leica Store Online France) indicates 310€ VAT included. Delivery 2-3 days. Also find price is reasonable but after 1 year the subscription to the LUX-App is to be paid. I do have interest, am going to contact the local BE Leica Boutique when the LUX Grip would become available. Was already considering buying a new iPhone anyway and it seems like a nice addition, although I still prefer a real (compact) camera.
Vizypix Posted February 11 Share #15 Posted February 11 I have just received my Lux Grip and paired it. Really good quality. The focus half press is more of a light touch than a half press, so that takes some getting used to. But the experience of pressing a button on a grip with one hand is both satisfying and natural. Time will tell if it improves my photography! I have two questions for Leica though: 1. Can the grip be set to launch the Lux app or do I still have to launch that separately? That would be cool and time saving if it could launch it. 2. If I already have a one year subscription to Lux Pro, how can I take advantage of that free subscription offer with each purchase? Pros and cons? https://leica-camera.com/en-SE/mobile/lux-grip The Quick Start guide does not tell you how to pair the grip. you have to manually upgrade the Lux app via the App Store so that it includes the Lux Grip option in settings. Then you can pair it. You just follow the on-screen instructions. Be aware that when remove the grip and reattach later, you need to press the shutter button until you get a green light at the base of the grip for it to re-connect. Unlike one You Tube reviewer says, pressing the dial at the front does have a function - in Aperture mode it selects either of the top 3 menus - grid, aperture and photo Looks. There is a thin redline that moves above the next top menu in sequence with each press. You can then rotate the dial to change the selection in the relevant sub-menu. It might be quicker to do this via the touch screen interface but at least you can do it one handed direct from the grip if you have wet or greasy fingers.

Whilst I haven’t had an answer yet, I have configured the Action button on the iphone16 to launch Leica Lux in Aperture mode with my default lense of the Noctilux 50mm. Very handy and in combo with the grip makes it much easier to take photos as quickly as you can with the standard iPhone camera. RQ44 Posted February 11 Share #20 Posted February 11 These gimmick products really cheapen a brand and drop it's integrity. Imagine if Bollinger started producing soda pop drinks. The LUX app was a really poor move by Leica. The smartphone camera is still samsung or apple....its not Leica and neither are the lenses. If an alternate camera brand made this would you even bother.......I think not.
