Pelu2010 Posted February 6 Share #1  Posted February 6 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey, there is one feature that I would like to discuss in the forum. If you record with a Atomos there should be a feature called "rec over HDMI". Is this possible? If not , I would love to see this in future firmware updates. Its not a lot of fun if you need to hit record on the camera and ob the monitor/recoder as well. This should be integrated as a signal that travels over HDMI. Does someone have insides on this? My shogun is to old, so I can't test this.  cheers Peter
Advertisement Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Hi Pelu2010, Take a look here Start Stop Rec. Atomos?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LocalHero1953 Posted February 6 Share #2 Â Posted February 6 I used the Blackmagic Video Assist for a while with the SL2-S, recording over HDMI. I assume the Atomos behaves in a similar way. There is no need to press record on the camera at all. The HDMI feed is continuous even when the camera is not recording. The external device is just tapping into the HDMI feed, and you manage the recording from the external device itself.
Pelu2010 Posted February 6 Author Share #3  Posted February 6 If you are holding the camera in your hand, it’s much easier to perform movements with the camera if the start stop works from the camera. if the camera does not perform this action, you need to start the recorder and then go for the start position.
Photoworks Posted February 6 Share #4  Posted February 6 I am not using a recorder at this time, but with the previous Sl2 I was using the Panasonic trigger on my video assist recorder

However, IIRC there was an option with the BM Video Assist to start recording with the timecode from the camera (i.e. it would start recording when the camera started recording). Perhaps the Atomos doesn't have this feature. Of course, then the camera records as well, and you have to be sure you have enough storage space on your camera cards. Lets say you are not working alone You are part of a team and you talk to all of them. Then there is a focus puller and a video assist and so on. So you are not run and gun but part of a bigger production, which is possible with the camera. And then there are talents that are directed and light and sound and dolly and follow focus etc. And then you forget to press both recording option because they are not linked. The camera is marketed as a video production tool. I pointed out that if so it could be an inconvenience that the signal is not transported to the recorder. And I think this is a flaw. Not that I am going to shoot tomorrow with the crew I mentioned but it may happen. And I think that it's possible to fix this in the firmware and keep an eye on this in future. I hope this is not only me ....

Jonathan Levin Posted February 6 Share #8  Posted February 6 Peter. I used to have an Atomos Ninja Flame that I paired with my Nikon D850. Both were sold to get into the Leica SL3. I'm just trying to clarify what you are asking: Do you want the camera AND the Atomos to record simultaneously? Possibly for the back-up aspect? I have never activated recording to Atomos using the camera. I always (and assumed this was the correct way) pressed record on the Ninja screen to record the live HDMI "feed" from the camera. The camera never had to be activated in anyway. Or are you just trying to initiate recording using the SL3 record button? It's been a while, but I think there is a setting on  the Atomos that allows for recording to be initiated using camera control. This was with the Nikon, not sure about the SL3. Again, it's been a while.
Jonathan Levin Posted February 6 Share #9  Posted February 6 Maybe this will help. Not our gear but may offer some clues? At the 2 min mark they go into settings. FWIW. Jonathan

Again, it's been a while. On my Fx3 that I also use for shootings, I output the raw video to a ninja > and if I press the camera release button, the camera triggers the ninja. I could record simultaneously on the camera and the ninja but sometimes I only use the ninja. I found this way of recording is the most relaxing and you don’t forget to press the ninja , because it’s triggered by the camera. And this is a usual production workflow in video or film production.  And it would be great if some of the basic system would be integrated in the camera. like shutter angle and hdmi rec triggering.
Jonathan Levin Posted February 7 Share #11  Posted February 7 Shooting simultaneously seems like you’d need a lot of power, but if connected to main probably not issue. I’d be more concerned with over burdening the whole system by having it do to many things at once that may or may not affect capture.
