I’ve been looking back at the lenses I use and those I don’t + an M6TTL in exc+ condition, and have been considering the sunk cost they represent and how I could be getting better photographic bangs for my bucks. The lenses are 15 CV 4.5, recent series 28 Summicron Asph (not the close focus one), 35 Summilux Asph, 50 Summilux 2023 close focus, Summarit 90 2.4, 135 APO-Telyt 3.4.  And there’s my black M10-R. The harsh reality is that for any paying / commission work I depend on two SL2 bodies + 24-90 / 90-280 & 35 + 75 APO and 90% of images taken with the M10 are at 35mm. I’ve not put a film through the M6 in two decades.

Which leads me to the Q3 43.  I had the Q2 and liked it but was not convinced by its AF, and, in the end, I’m not a 28mm photographer.  I feel that the Q3 43 might do most of what I need when I don’t want the bulk / weight of the DSLR.  PLAN?  I’m getting a valuation for everything (plus various adapters) apart from the M10-R and the 35 cron asph, with a view to getting the Q3 43, and depending on SL for wider or longer work (+ the Q’s potential to crop to 90 for travel …).

I’d be interested to hear if anyone has made this kind of jump or is considering it.

Thanks!

I did not sell anything yet, but I stopped using my M11 after buying the Q3 43. I mostly used 35 mm and 50 mm on my M11, and the Q3 43 replaces them. If you go pixel peeping, yes, the 50mm Summilux-M produces better images, but the difference isn't that significant for my use cases.

I am not a professional photographer, but I have a Sony A1 for more complex scenarios (like birds or events), and use my M11 and now Q3 43 primarily as a travel / everyday camera. The Q3 43 handles 90% of what I used the M11 for, and the rest (wide-angle landscapes) can be solved by stitching panoramas - done it in Zion and Bryce Canyon just a month ago :)

Of course, I can't imagine you'd want to stitch 43mm images to emulate a 15mm lens, but it could replace your 28mm (with stitching), 35mm and 50mm lenses, and a 90mm crop is usable when you really really need it.

I stopped to use my Nikon D800 with pro grade prime lenses after i bought the Q2 28mm back in 2019 for a 6 months road trip.
For my style i prefer the 28mm as i have a wider view what i like and can crop if necessary and the 43mm would be the wrong one for me.
The Q series is probably the best compact camera, perfect for carry around but the fixed lens can but does not have to limit the use for some.

However, i have to admit that i just bought a used but unused SL2 as i miss macro and ultra wide photography so i added
Sigma 14mm 1,8 ART (new)
Sigma 28mm 1.4 ART (used)
Sigma 105mm macro (new)

For this reason i suggest to keep the big size setup to use for any other what is not possible with the Q

Chris, as you know I do a lot of work in theatre and performance spaces, unpaid, but aiming to work to professional standards. Similar to you I rely almost entirely on the SL2-S, 24-90 and 90-280, with the Sigma 85/1.4 for headshots. Since getting the CL years ago, I found the digital Ms (M240 in my case) were squeezed out between the 'pro' use of the SL and the travel/social use of the CL - so I sold the M. Eventually I replaced the CL with the Q2, for much the same purpose as the CL. Last year I swapped the Q2 for the Q3 43 and things have changed a bit. The Q3 43 is not quite up there for low light/high ISO performance - the colour is similar, but the dark shadows cannot be lifted to the same extent as the SL2-S. Nevertheless I have been increasingly using the Q3 43 for some of the performance related stuff, especially for rehearsals in spaces that aren't theatres or stages and in small performance spaces. The size of the Q3 43 is more appropriate for intimate spaces and close ups, and it is so silent I never feel the need to switch to electronic shutter.

Aside from the shadow-lifting limitations, I often wish it had been a Q3 35, but then I am surprised how often I use the 'long' end of the Q3 43. For online publicity and printing in programmes, 2000 pixels on the long edge is more than enough (and conveniently is what Adobe allows for third parties to download from Lightroom online collections), so one can theoretically use the 60mp Q3 43 for 200mm equivalent focal lengths (and the Q3 for 135mm). I prefer the Q3 43 for general use, although for in use for performance the Q3 might be as practical because of the wider angle (though subjectively I prefer the Apo-Summicron lens).

I sold my M2 when I first bought a digital M (M9), so I haven't had a film camera hanging around for decades. I reacquired a M4 in covid lockdown, and have since added a MP and several Barnacks - they all get used - in sequence - but with a different mindset entirely to the one I have for performance stuff, or for family/travel.

Hope this helps!

Again thanks... I'm now just waiting for Ffordes to get back to me!  And as a follow up to @Segal, here's a panorama from 3 images (M10-R + 35 Summicron Asph) stitched in LR Classic. For those who know the English Lake district this is looking across to the Coniston massif and the Landales from high on Loughrigg.  GLORIOUS weather for once 😊

I have a SL set for portraits and events, and had a m10m with some lenses for all other usage. Though great, to me the Q43 was more practical (and weatherproof which is important to me), so I exchanged my m-set for a Q and another SL set.

Though very happy, I did miss the fun part of a M, so I recently bought a m8 with a 28/50 set for b/w photography.

The Q is really a great allrounder, the SL’s are work horses, but a M is a M.

@PhotoCruiser - thanks. For landscape the stitching works well.  For interiors it’s more of a problem - but the the SL come into play.  If 24 doesn’t do it there is some excellent and affordable L mount glass out there that would take me wider.
I appreciate you comments - looks like the direction to go…

@Olaf_ZG - again, interesting and helpful. I’ve just had a quote from MPB which would cover the cost of a mint used Q3 43 (interesting that there are some for sale already!), but hope to do better with Ffordes (Alister is away this week).  It now looks as if I’ll be able to keep the M10-R + 35 & 28 cron asph.  This should cox-exist well with the Q3 43 and the paired SL2s (which still work fine for me) with the lovely SL glass. Win win?

Best to all…

how much depreciation has occurred already with the Q3 43? I think they’re still in short supply in the states.
