doctorlebel Posted January 13 Share #1  Posted January 13 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Everyone, I recently acquired my first grey paint Leica IIIc, s/n 388601, that was delivered to Berlin on Nov. 13, 1942.  The outer vulcanite is badly cracked, bubbled, broken along the front left and right side.  I managed to secure the pieces on the left side, but the right side as you can see is more seriously damaged.  So I wanted to reach out to forum members and get your perspective on replacing the vulcanite with either an Aki-Asahi covering, or just keeping the original and accept the missing pieces which there will be when I’m through working on it.  Welcome, dear visitor! andybarton Posted January 13 Share #2  Posted January 13 How far are you taking this restoration? Do you want it to look like new, or just be a good example of an 80 year old camera?
Mute-on Posted January 14 Share #3  Posted January 14 (edited) Better to repair and keep mostly original than replace with aftermarket, in my view. As they say in the classic car circles, it’s only original once … There are black liquid rubber products that can be imprinted with texture. A search online should turn something up.  Edit - Milliput, as in this thread  Edited January 14 by Mute-on
spydrxx Posted January 14 Share #4 Â Posted January 14 I've reskinned a number of cameras over the years and appreciate the almost new look over the often disasterous looking cameras with crumbling coverings. But I wouldn't dissuade those who treasure crumbling artifacts - to each his own.
Deeetona Posted January 14 Share #5 Â Posted January 14 I'd agree. Newly reskinned cameras only look a bit weird when really new. A few years of usage add some good patina.
doctorlebel Posted January 14 Author Share #6  Posted January 14 Hi Andy, When the camera arrived, it wasn’t in proper working order.  The shutter curtains were worn out and causing the camera to not work correctly. So I disassembled the camera, made a new pair of shutter curtains and cleaned, lubed, and reassembled the camera.  All that needs to be done now is reattaching the outer shell.  Welcome, dear visitor!
