Irrespective of metering, regardless of what setting you have, if you are adjusting the exposure compensation dial you now negate the need for the setting anyway. I could never understand why the setting still exists. Adjusting with exposure compensation makes the metering pointless. I could be in highlight metering mode and the scene may be too dark and so I adjust to make image brighter. Is it still based on highlight metering anymore?

I agree with bobtodrick. You decide on the exposure, not the camera.

I agree. I forget about the metering mode as i just use the compensation dial. No matter what metering mode you use its never perfect. Using the dial makes you get it right every time.

Metering in "Spot Mode" to the "Highlight" using AE-L and then recomposing has served me well over the years.  I always set my cameras to -1/3 exposure compensation regardless.  This setup seems to give me more "keepers"without extensive post processing, but each to his own.......
