Still a shame that resellers are attempting to buy up the available supply to then relist at a higher price thus driving up the market value. Specifically, the eBay seller with the pair of M-Ds listed at over 7k attempted to purchase the German copy referenced here. Not only did they attempt to buy it, the 2k+ price difference wasn't sufficient, they attempted to lowball the seller.

Datsch Posted January 9 Share #90 Posted January 9 (edited) Just to be clear, here are the two outlier 7k asking price ads we are talking about. They both appear to be established dealers with plenty of other Leicas on their current inventory. Foterna in Germany, 4998713, €7100 which I make to be $7300 on sale since 11 Nov 2024. No brassing that I can see, I agree this is “Sehr guter Zustand mit minimalen Gebrauchsspuren.” Claims to have 5000 shutter actuations and a recent service in Wetzlar. https://www.ebay.de/itm/267058164590?epid=224024464&itmmeta=01JH562F71WT5MT823SWJQC6V9&hash=item3e2de8336e:g:hJoAAOSw0nxnLz4v Yokohama Camera in Japan, 4998671, $7699.99 on sale since Jan 07 2025. Small brassing on two front corners of the top plate, and also in slot of front screw. So not ‘Mint’ as claimed in adverts title, but to be fair it also says ‘almost no signs of use’ so I guess that’s open to interpretation. https://www.ebay.com/itm/396100086886?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D777008%26algo%3DPERSONAL.TOPIC%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20230823115209%26meid%3D089f9e0ab8c2433fa6ea100166bd46d5%26pid%3D101800%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26itm%3D396100086886%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D4375194%26algv%3DRecentlyViewedItemsV2SignedOut%26brand%3DLeica&_trksid=p4375194.c101800.m5481&_trkparms=parentrq%3A4aa799621940aabacbe7b4abffffd1ea|pageci%3A4669dc05-ce76-11ef-b434-a69943256a2a|iid%3A1|vlpname%3Avlp_homepage Note that I make no opinion about these sellers, just observation about the current adverts for these two M-D’s which are higher priced than what we have usually seen in the past. If there is one piece of advice I might mention it would be to read the instructions regarding cleaning the sensor; especially if you are going to have it done by a third party... Interesting, I will definitely do so. Is sensor dust more of an issue on these cameras than others, or simply the cleaning process is more specific? The camera was just serviced at Leica in Wetzlar, but this is good to known regardless. 2 hours ago, Datsch said: Just to be clear, here are the two outlier 7k asking price ads we are talking about. Yes, and notice that Foterna has 2 available. This is the seller that attempted to buy a third for in the 4k range. That should tell you something. Overall pricing is interesting nonetheless, and I will be keeping an eye on any further ads, as I am sure many of us do. Sensor dust is no different from any other M but as there is no rear screen the process of keeping the shutter open for cleaning the sensor is unique to this model. You will see what this entails once you receive the camera but, in brief, the off/on control is set to the 'self-timer' position and both the shutter-release and the adjacent 'Function' button are pressed at the same time. This opens the shutter curtain and it will stay like this until, at the finish of the cleaning operation, the off/on control is returned to the 'Off' position. Nothing will happen until 10 seconds (the 'self timer' duration) has elapsed so it is a very good idea to try to keep more dust from entering the lens throat during that period! Philip. It’s hardly noticeable for my landscapes but it might affect you differently… Yes; I shoot quite a lot of stuff with wide lenses and using small apertures so sensor dust can be a right royal PITA! These days I tend to give my sensors a clean every couple of months and will always do so before I head-off for a fortnight away. I learned my lesson after I returned home from one trip to a country with a nigh-on perpetually cloudless sky. The sensor-dust situation (in both the M-D and the Monochrom) was absolutely chronic and I ended up spending many many hours cleaning somewhere over 1,000 images before any of them could be used. It is, of course, impossible to avoid dust entirely if one changes lenses when out'n'about but had the sensors been clean before I embarked on the trip the situation would have been nowhere near as bad as it turned out to be. harleybob Posted January 9 Share #96 Posted January 9 I have decided for sure to sell or trade in my M-D. The trade in has appeal as you do save on the sales tax, only paying difference between the buy and sell values. I have been retired from professional photography since about 2010 so I am not up to date on who are the trusted dealers out there. The camera was purchased from Tamarkin by me as a factory demo. I am familiar with KEH and Tamarkin and have bought from ClassicConnection but not dealt with any of them in a long time. Now there is MPB.COM which seems like the automated way to trade in and buy used. Their initial automatic offer was decent and they do have a “Almost New” rated camera I want to trade in for. Anyone have suggestions? I have sold quite a bit of my old Leica and Hasselblad on eBay, all with terrific experiences, but I think I want to go the easy route on this one. MPB.COM offers free return of the camera to you if they lower their offer once they have it and you do not accept lower price. I don’t see any real bad reviews online for any of the main Leica used dealers. Any tips on a price range for the M-D in what I would consider Ex or Ex+? I have about 2500 frames on it . Some brassing on the baseplate. I also have a 21, 28 and 50 but will hang on to them for a while until I know I will not want an M11….M12??(I have never owned an odd numbered Leica…just M2, M4, M6 and M-D….looking at a Q2 also).

You can see the range of prices these have sold for in the chart within this thread, probably a few pages back now, however, it does not include condition. I agree the KEH / MPB route is nice and easy. I have sold to KEH recently and it was very smooth, although, I thought the condition was one level higher than they rated it and they would not give me the reasoning for their rating, but it was still a fair price and the easiest route for that specific camera (far less niche than an M-D). I would, at the very least, get quotes form them both, considering how easy the quote process is. If you are willing to put in a bit more work to sell it yourself, I would imagine that you could probably make a little bit more, at least 5k, potentially closer to 6k based on your condition and assuming it comes with the original box / accessories, and how long you are willing to wait for a buyer. If you have an account on Fred Miranda, they have a pretty active Leica classifieds section. There is also a Leica classifieds Facebook group, but I hear the acceptance process can take a long time and depending on your Facebook presence, you may simple not be accepted at all. Obviously, putting it for sale on eBay is an option too, although, I don't know what their commission is. At this point, all you would have to do is undercut the 7k+ copies on there and you would be the cheapest. Edited January 9 by m-d262 1
