Why do photographers want to make their digital images look like film anyway…?

I'm not sure if you are being serious or having a laugh?

I'd far rather hear Itzhak Perlman playing a student-level Yamaha than A.N. Other playing a Strad. It's not even open to question (IMO).

I seem to remember viewing a clip where several 'experts' were gathered together to listen to a well-respected violinist - hidden from view behind a screen - perform the same piece on several violins including a Stradivarius.

I'm hazy on the details so will see if I can find it as it's quite illuminating...

I’d rather hear the sound of one of the best violins played by one of the best violinists…🤓

The Bath Festival Chamber Orchestra so happened to be recorded on an audiophile ASD LP......That’s why we all have the freedom to make our own choices whether which LP or other source to buy…

I think you might have overlooked the point being made in the post which you quoted...

In the “off key” issue, where does the responsibility go…🥸

Which is…?

That, IMO, it would give me more pleasure to hear an excellent virtuoso play an entry-level violin that an 'alright' violinist playing a Strad.

Where these types of acoustic stringed instruments are concerned the input from the musician - his or her skill in terms of touch, feel and, in the case of a violin / viola / cello etc., their bowing - can have a FAR greater effect on end-tone than the fundamental tone inherent in the instrument itself.

As such, in the case mentioned earlier, Perlman playing a Student-level Yamaha would be able to extract a far 'better' tone(*) than would an ok player with a Strad.

Ask any musician and I'd suspect that they would have a similar view.

We should start a new thread to debate the point!......😸......

The charismatic music teacher at the local primary school had an immense impact on all the children who passed through her classes, including our own. When she retired, they invited one of her former pupils, Tom Poster, who I remember as a nipper in no. 1 daughter's class, to come to play at her retirement party - a small party for staff and others, in which I was included as my wife was a school governor. He played the old school upright piano, which had been tuned for the occasion but was not, definitely not, a Steinway. It was a wonderful performance: Bach and Stravinsky IIRC. If ever there was a lesson that a great performance does not need the best tools, this was it. And I would far rather hear and see Tom Poster playing that piano in front of me than listen to any one of his recordings on better instruments.

You seemed to care a lot…!

No, I said it was off key. I did not say that I care about this recording. I did listen it once, I don’t have to listen to it any more.

and further: What you can hear is what you have learned. It is done with your musical mind , not with your ears. You can learn to hear better, that’s what musicians learn: Training you mind/ ability.
You can have eyes , but that would not mean that you can read Ullysses by James Joyce. You first have to learn to read. And then You have to devellope yourself. Experience and ability to learn and have good teachers.

Currently listening to the Brandenburg Concertos, Bath Festival Chamber Orchestra, ASD 327 with Yehudi Menuhin playing the Stradivarius and suddenly realizing why enjoy such a bad performance, as I have often done, and appreciating Yehudi as a great violinist when he’s not…🧐
