I believe that m0.8 lenses will be rather niche episode in cinema production. I like them for their character. Camera assistants had ambivalent feelings about size, close focus at 0,7 or even 1m, very short focus throw, and how delicate they are compared to Hugo lineup.

The 0.8 lenses were a trial balloon by Leitz Cine. It proved successful with productions that don't need the efficiency of real cine lenses: commercials, "art" films, and shorter sequences that are part of long-form content.

The next logical step for Leitz Cine was to release the Hugo line which addresses all of the practical concerns raised by the 0.8s. Hugos use the same optics (plus a few more), but they are in cine mechanicals. That means that they have consistent focus throw, common focus/aperture gear locations, common fronts for matte boxes, and they are physically stronger so you can hang heavy matte boxes off them without binding the focus.

As such, the two lines don't compete. The Hugo line replaced the 0.8 line.

I actually found that a group in the Shenzhen area of China has a conversion process to add the 0.8 gears in metal and declick iris for about 400-500 per lens.  I’ll attach the link to them.  Look identical to leitz cine versions and seems affordable vs 2-3x the cost of an M to get the 0.8 factory version.

would I rather have the official version, yeah but gotta weigh the dollars vs real differences.

Dulcos lenses in Los Angeles  California also does it . I have used them before and they are very good and professional. Give them a Call before you send to China.

Just to make your decisions harder.  You’d need to get m mount camera front  for PL/LPL mount native  cameras, if you shoot with something smaller, e-mount, L mount or similar I’d give Cooke sp3 a thought, they seem to be better prepared for cine use and Cooke’s in general (I have used most their lenses apart from sp3)  deliver very good image wise.
