I am not a collector, but seriously thinking of the m60, and in negotiations with the dealer, though I might have offered too low, as he didn’t respond.

Price is significantly below 15 though…

At the other hand, this is no. 6 which I saw on offer this week. Obviously it is not really a collector’s item as it is so much for sale.

I would say that the M60 was purely a collector’s item and never intended to be used. The lack of rear screen and strap lugs are two big clues.

The fact that there are people reselling them without all the boxes and all the original kit is a bit odd.

As it is not a private deal, but via a store, I would expect the store has done the due diligence…

For most of my life I've used film cameras, and always carried them in their ever-ready cases, so that their weight was taken by the case and strap. Now in the digital era, I've never been happy at trusting the weight of a camera and lens to two tiny lugs.

Since 2019 my user camera has been screenless - first an M-D and now a Series 60.

Perhaps the fact that Series 60 cameras and their associated lenses are being offered individually is that the owners found that they were using just the camera or just the lens. If they were collectors, they would probably have kept the full kit intact.

My MD 262 doesn’t have a screen but it does have strap lugs.
It’s my main camera. If it came without strap lugs I wouldn’t have bought one…!

With the greatest of respect, Andy, I'm not at all convinced by any of your observations / conclusions.

I won't comment on the utterly idiotic decision (IMO of course) to dispense with the strap-lugs; I've already ranted about that stupidity enough already! However...

If you hang around here you will notice that quite a few forumites have - or have had - the M60 as their 'Daily Driver'; one forumite even had two. Perhaps the fact that some of these cameras come onto the market without boxes'n'stuff suggests they are / were not bought simply to be 'Collector's Pieces'? Collectors know that complete packages are worth far more than the individual components so selling, for instance, an unboxed body would reach less, financially, than otherwise so why ditch the packaging?

The 'Steelilux' 35mm f1.4 lens, I allow, is a different case entirely and these do seem to be 'held back' more than is the case with the bodies. I disapprove of this practice (FWIW).

You posit that the lack of a rear screen is a clue as to why these cameras were "never intended to be used"? Why? Which of the following has a rear screen?

Leica M1; Leica M2; Leica M3; Leica M4; Leica M5; Leica M6; Leica M7...(and sub-divisions)...

There is absolutely nothing(*) whatsoever about using an M Edition 60 - nor any other screenless digi-M - that is more difficult than using any film-M ever made. And film-M cameras are - and always have been - made to be used.

You should give one a go sometime; you might love it!

🙂

Philip.

My pension fund might last until I’m 91.

Provided I don’t buy any daft collectors’ only Leica M cameras…

Why? What happens when / after you are 91?.......

I don't buy collectors-only M either but four or five years ago there was an M Edition 60 with original 35 f1.4 being offered - by one of the well-known dealerships - for less than the price of the current M (M240?) with the current 35 Summilux. I considered it. The strap-lug-less aspect put me off completely. Financially a bad move but functionally the correct decision.

If you are ever down in this part of the world I'd be delighted to lend you the M-D Typ-262 for the duration of your visit. I suspect that you would enjoy the experience.

🙂

I had one, and used it.

The lack of strap lugs didn’t bother me too much, as I used the leather case when I needed a strap.  I even ordered an extra case.  Nice camera, just didn’t like the images with the 35 Summilux (FLE), which was a shame.  It was the best made Leica lens I ever had.  Loved the concept, didn’t like the lens - sold the kit.
