DAVIDMC100 Posted December 1, 2024 Share #1 Posted December 1, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, I have searched our topics but I wanted to ask what is everyone's experience with lens choice doing a family (wide) portrait versus a single head shot? I have 35, 50 mm M lenses but also 23 and 18-56 TL lenses. I also tried a 50mm TTArtisan but wasn't too happy with results. Just trying to make the wife happy 🙂 So I get a 75mm Summicron ? I'm trying to talk myself out of that ! Dave
Advertisement Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 Hi DAVIDMC100, Take a look here Family Portrait Lens on Leica CL. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
tommonego@gmail.com Posted December 1, 2024 Share #2 Posted December 1, 2024 If you want a multiple person portrait photo, I'd start with your 35, if alot of folks the 23, or the zoom equivalent for either. 50mm starts pushing you away from the group, a 75 on a CL would be a good head shot lens, but if 75 Summicron lens would make you happy, hmmm. LocalHero1953 Posted December 1, 2024 Share #3 Posted December 1, 2024 Your 35 is a ~50mm on the CL, while your 23mm is the 35 equivalent, and I would start with that (or the 18-56 at the wide end). One can shoot a family group with a 500mm lens if here is enough space to walk back, but in practice something in the 28-35 range (full frame equivalent) is more manageable. Anything wider and you can run into distortion problems at the edges and perspective control is harder (keeping verticals vertical and horizontals horizontal).
mokona Posted December 1, 2024 Share #4 Posted December 1, 2024 for single headshot, the sigma 56mm dc f1.4 is very good !
TL3 Posted December 5, 2024 Share #5 Posted December 5, 2024 I use the 35mm TL for family portraits if I can get back far enough. Single head shot I use the 60 TL or 80 R 1.4 wide open if I want bokeh
