Trekking/Monopod

Hello Kasimir

There are a huge amount of different Trekkinkpoles, and I have seen people in the mountains of Norway, who have fittet gear at the pole to hold a camera.

I have been using Manfrotto Monopods since1982 and I am very positive about them.

There are two new lightweigt carbonfiber monopods from Manfrotto (some places sold as Bogen or what ever).

I've been searching for a trekking/monopod and so far I've ran into monopods that are not comfortable to use as a walking stick (too heavy usually) and walking sticks that don't work well as monopods (not easily adjustable for height). Other lighter weight monpods have pretty large diameter tubing at the top which tires my hands out when heavily used as trekking pole. I also have a Neotec monopod which is great for long lenses/SLR use but has a tendency to extend when I don't want it to (usually while walking) as well as the hefty weight. Other monopods just didn't feel stable enough to support me if/when I stumble (I have weakened ankles from a childhood injury).

Although not 100% perfect, I've been using the Gitzo monotrek and it has been just fine. I had to put a little grip tape under the foam grip to keep it fro slipping when it is humid outside. It also only has a metal "spike" which makes for a rather uncomfortable foot on pavement for urban outings. I fashioned a rubber "foot" out of some rubber automotive tube and a replacement rubber tripod "foot" that fits over the metal spike. Works pretty well now. I also wish that it was a bit shorter when completely collapsed so I can fit it IN my messenger bag when not in use.

I hardly agree that the monotrek is a "flimsy" junk... There are walking sticks with a simple cheap screw for attaching a camera and there are heavy duty monopods that are horrible for walking. They cover various degrees from "more like-walking-stick" to "more like a monopod"... but that is a personal decision.

The Gitzo monotrek is a happy medium that I found works for me... mostly... I've never had it slip and collapse on itself as I use it.

I have the Bogen 3218 monopod and recommend it.

It is light in weight, yet very sturdy. It would make a swell club, if some scumbag decided to try to relieve you of your Leica.

I have the Gitzo Monotrek and it's a flimsy piece of junk when compared to the Induro monopod at less than half the price and much more compact when collapsed.

A most interesting statement especially the ...junk bit..The world is definitely full of it!

Junk ,I mean.
