Personally, I'd go for the M10-R.

  • 40 MP (if you need the resolution)
  • Great colours
  • Quiet shutter, same as in M10-P
  • Beautiful minimalist design complete with bottom plate
  • It may age and depreciate very well, as the last naturally-aspirated Ferrari

As for the M11, in my opinion, they’ve strayed too far from what a Leica rangefinder is meant to be. I don't like its busy shutter sound, magenta cast, unnecessary extra button on the top (which I have no use for), and the exposed USB socket on the bottom—all detract from its appeal for me.

This!

Just wanted to post an update and contradict my own previously posted advice a bit: go for the M10 if colour matters, M10-P if quiet shutter matters. And for M10-R if resolution (and quiet shutter) matters.

I have both, the M10 and M10-R. Sometimes I take one and sometimes the other.

I know I know, its often asked. But alway good to brainstorm with people more knowledgeable then me

I am asking in this forum as there is no general M forum, and 2/3 are M10s !!

For me, I have had an M10, but not an M10-P or an M11 before

I need it for a project involving street photography during travel

The thing is value vs results. Of course nobody needs more then an M2 for good photos, but there is a cost/functionality matrix.

I am trading in one M body, and the choice is an upgrade cost after trade-in:

1. M10 Black - £1000

2. M10-P (Silver - can't get a black at the moment, which I would have prefered) - £2100

3. M11 (black) - £3500

What matters to me ? With the M10-P I am getting silenter shutter, which is very useful. With the M11 I am dropping the weight and getting higher resolution and better battery life.

The thing is what is worth. The most expensive camera will depreciate the most. The M10 probably wont at all, and appreciate if kept in good condition.

The difference is a good voigtlander or used good Leica lens. (I need to buy a 50mm f1.5/f1.4 - don't ask ....)

My head is telling me to get the M10-P, as I don't really need more and the silent shutter is great for more subtle shooting. My heart is telling me to get the M11, as I would keep it for longer, and it is more future proofed, e.g. in terms of battery availability, updates, etc. My pocket is telling me to get the M10.

What do you guys think ?

I just saw a camera posted recently at a camera store that is the perfect M10 to buy. It's a new old stock unused in the box M10R Black Chrome.

No. The M10P has a quieter shutter, not a silent shutter. The only silent shutter is the M11 when you shoot the electric shutter.

Probably also the reason why they didn't care about the sound of the mechanical shutter anymore. In my M11-D it’s a somewhat tinny and unpleasant sound and I guess the aluminum body (aka resonating body) makes it even worse. 😁

I have the M10-P and the M11-P, the latter for the past two weeks.

While the M11-P is improved in aspects like battery life and internal memory, which works as a second memory card, I have to say that I find the colors of the M10-P better.

I got a very good deal on the M11-P for a unit that had been sitting in the store for over six months without selling, which is why I bought it. If the camera doesn’t convince me in the end, I can sell it second-hand without losing money.

If I could only have one camera, it would undoubtedly be the M10-P.

That said, unlike some colleagues, I actually like the additional button on the top of the M11-P, as I have it set to change the metering mode.

That being said, I repeat, for me, the choice is unquestionably the M10-P.

Not sure? Just check the forums and decide for yourself:

M11 Threads:

  • M11-D not saving images
  • M11 freezing with overheating
  • How to unsee Magenta cast?
  • M11 rangefinder focusing errors
  • Fixing the frame selector lever M11-P
  • M11-P Internal memory corrupted
  • M12 wishlist
  • I don’t want the M11, I would like the SL-M

M10 Threads:

  • Best M10 Strap
  • M10-R to replace all other digital cameras?

That should tell you all you need to know 😎

I am luckily to have a detailed trial of M11P today at a camera shop during my trip to Shinjuku, Japan. I decided not to upgrade my M10P to M11P after the trial as I can't accept the open shutter metering operation that same as the live view of my M10P and with very bad shutter sound. If the next M12 still using the same metering method, I think I would give up the upgrade and keep using my M10P until its failure.

I used it but emis much better the mechanical one. You have banding with some lights and rolling shutter with the electronic so it only can be used under specific circunstances.

The M10-P mech shutter is great, quieter then the M11-P’s one but this does not mind that the latter is noisy. Is decently quieter too.
