You might be better off sticking with circular filters and then attaching an adjustable flag to your camera cage when needed. But there are small matte boxes that can adapt down to 39mm with a step up ring. Here is one reasonably priced option: SmallRig Mini Matte Box Lite 3575

I wouldn't hang a heavy matte box from an M lens. Modern cinema lenses are designed for that sort of abuse, but M lenses (or most still lenses) are not.

Your main alternative is to get a rod plate and rods, and attach your matte box to that.

You have a SmallRig cage in your image, here's their matte box mount: https://www.smallrig.com/Swing-Away-4414.html . Note that their more expensive matte boxes come with rod mounts already. Most of their matte boxes include a French flag, so the question is whether or not you want to use filters, and if so what size and how many?

Thanks @JSH and @BernardC for the info. I don't want to attach anything to the lens or use rods as it will make my set-up unwieldy. (I have rods and a smallrig mattebox for use on larger cameras). Since the R5C has no built in ND I need to use a variable ND filter (from URTH), but it flares terribly in direct sunlight, so I need to be able to flag the light. I've looked everywhere online but think I will have have to find a way to make a DIY solution.
