andybarton Posted August 27, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 27, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Seconds later, the Porsche had a black dent all along the front wing. But at least it finished the race (unlike the Morgan ) So, that's why there is a wider than usual stroke line round this one - in reverence to the loss. Advertisement Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Hi andybarton, Take a look here Some viewers may find this image disturbing (WGL...). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
biglouis Posted August 27, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 27, 2006 Andy Lovely photograph. If you don't mind giving me the benefit of your experience is the background blurred because of the depth of field being shallow or because you were panning as you took the shot? I'm interested in your technique, is what I'm asking. TIA LouisB
andybarton Posted August 27, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted August 27, 2006 A bit of both. I was using my 90 (which is around 120mm when stuck onto an R8/DMR due to the crop factor), so the depth of field is pretty shallow anyway. I focused on the front 1/4 of the track and hoped for the best. It's also panned to follow the cars. I have never had a motordrive before, so today was the first time that I have been able to have a play with the technique. Not something you'd want to waste a lot of film on, to be honest... stunsworth Posted August 27, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 27, 2006 Well you did a lot better than I did. As predicted almost all of my panning shots are crap! Maybe I'll have better luck tomorrow.
dhsimmonds Posted August 27, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 27, 2006 Nice shot Andy, you are getting to grips with the DMR! Who said that Leica's are not camera's for sports action photography? Cheers, Dave
imported_peter_m Posted August 27, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 27, 2006 Nice shots Andy, I enjoyed all your racing shots and you sure did a great job on the panning, its a lot more difficult then it looks. Looks like you and the DMR have become good friends Peter

elansprint72 Posted August 28, 2006 Share #8 Posted August 28, 2006 Considering how much practice you two have had at doing pan shots these have both come off very well, and I'd be pretty pleased with either of them, they're not perfect, but hey... As you may have found out there are a whole raft of panning techniques which can be used depending on the situation and the desired outcome- I'll PM you with my personal Masterclass, built up over 30 years of taking rubbish pan shots. Cheers, Pete.
andybarton Posted August 29, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted August 29, 2006 Thanks Pete One day, I'll get lucky.
abrewer Posted August 29, 2006 Share #10 Posted August 29, 2006 I haven't been commenting much (because I've been very busy with work) but I have been admiring these terrific photographs you're posting Andy. I agree with the assessment that you are truly getting the best out of the DMR you purchased recently. Also, you seem to have a knack for this genre...kind of like Bill Hollinger does. There's more skill in tracking and capturing cars at speed than most appreciate. Well done, sir! Thanks. Allan
lambroving Posted August 31, 2006 Share #11 Posted August 31, 2006 Well I did do a _little_ better today. Canon 5D, 180mm Elmar Clearly the owner of this last Tudor Red (Plus 4?, Lowline 4/4?) car has spent a vast fortune. Looks like a later car with a very custom bonnet, has a galvanized chassis and TOK/ Le Mans top. Maybe supercharged. Would love to know more.
elansprint72 Posted September 1, 2006 Share #12 Posted September 1, 2006 Info from programme says this is a 1962 Plus 4, 2138cc, driven by Gabriel and Dion Kremer, one of whom is domiciled in Switz, the other in the UK. Pete.
lambroving Posted September 2, 2006 Share #13 Posted September 2, 2006 Info from programme says this is a 1962 Plus 4, 2138cc, driven by Gabriel and Dion Kremer, one of whom is domiciled in Switz, the other in the UK. Pete. Pete, Thanks. Strange that a 1962 which has had a total rebuild from chasis up was not converted to SuperSport spec with Lawrencetune TR engine like TOK which took its class at Le Mans in 1962. I guess you saw that car this summer? Such a conversion on a 1962 would be totally race-legal as several others have been "created". Quite a few SuperSport Plus 4's came over here in the '60's. In fact I briefly raced one in 1964 in SCCA Class "D Production" for a friend. These cars can be spotted by a scoop on the right side of the bonnet to clear the velocity stacks on the Webers. Not all cars with scoops are SuperSports however...

elansprint72 Posted June 27, 2007 Share #19 Posted June 27, 2007 Apologies for raising the dead (thread) here, noticed the hi-jack post and just wondered if I had bought a duff D2; mine only seems to go to 1/2000th on the dial; is there an electronic way of getting 1/4000th? Actually, that car looks like it is doing 15mph.
