Apo-summicron-sl 28mm vs summicron-m 28mm asph

Hi Everyone! I hope everything is fine.

I have a question about apo sl 28mm. I have sl2-s and use summicron m 28mm with it for my portrait work and sometimes landscape with  it and my m7. Lately friend of mine offered me almost new apo sl 28mm for a very good price  (around ~ 3k)

Do you any of you have both or did you try both? Do you think that is it worth buying apo sl 28mm? I am interested in image quality especially. I will not sell my m version because i use it with m10 mono and m7. I ll just add apo version to my collection and it ll be my first apo sl lens by the way. (To be fair, i am afraid that i will have GAS after that lens and will buy 50mm and 90mm versions as well  )

3k for is it is a good price, I have seen it use $3800

considering the  scale goes like this from good to best:  Summicron-M, Sunnilux-M and APO Summicron-L

you are going to see differences in resolution, details, and microcontrast.

I Don't have the APO SL 28, but I do have 35, 50, 73, 90.  I think for portraits they are often too sharp and I prefer M lenses. I use the 75 for portraits but it requires more retouching.

From 3k you can buy, test, and resell it for the same or more.

My favorite APO SL are 35 and 75.

I didnt buy sigma f1.4 lenses because of being clinical sharp. If sl lenses have kind of same sharpness, it can be a problem for me. 

As you said, for that price i can test it and resell if necessary.

Borrow the lens from your friend and decide.  Only your style, workflow and assessment matter (weather sealing and AF aside).

Problem is that when i try something new, i have always WOW effect. So i know that i will buy it eventually  i am curious about long term experience.

You will have a WOW effect for sure if it is your first APO SL lens. And yes - you will want more of them. I wouldn't describe them clinical. They deliver an unbelievable  richness in detail and beautiful micro contrast.

Like already mentioned above. The SL 75 is an amazing portrait lens. I love using it.  M lenses can be more flattering for the model. Again it depends on the style. Don't overthink - go for it. Life is short

I am totally agree with you, life is really short to think about smt much  Thanks for the link, i will check it for sure. 

Asking out of curiosity, apo 75mm is better than 90mm? I did my work with 90mm and sometimes 135mm before, but never work with 75mm. I have read about apo 75mm in many places that its wonderful lens. Is that really special? I mean best of the apo's?

Duh, ya think?  I suggested trying the former, especially given friendly relationship. 

You said you were “wowed” every time you tried new gear, knowing you’d eventually buy it.  I can’t imagine you’d love every car you test drove; hence the question.  If you can’t be objective, maybe just GAS.  No need to worry about long term experience if you don’t gel with the product to start.

As you said, i am wowed when i try new gear. Do you know what gear means right? This is forum of photography right? Not anyhing else right? 

And i dont know why you are giving examples over cars. Why did you need give an example about cars in first place? Make yourself right about smt? They are different things, that you dont understand. Dont compare oranges with apples. 
Share your experience if you have. Dont try to make compare with other things, ok?

I use SL lenses with my SL2, and M lenses with my M bodies. Totally different shooting experiences and approaches.  Both have superb IQ and are fully capable of yielding fine prints, if I do my part well at every stage. 

Many systems yield high IQ these days. For me, ergonomics and handling are important differentiators, which can only be assessed personally.

Thank you for your opinions. Using m lenses with my sl2-s is easier for me sometimes with m camera, especially for portrait work ( I have lux 50, cron 90 and especially with 90 cron ibis is very helpful). Ergonomics and handling is great, and IQ is enough for my work. 
 

But sometimes i see other works with sl lenses and heard many positive feedbacks, such as handling, IQ, weather proof and etc. Mostly i shoot indoor but having that option is plus of course. Recently i just start to think that i should have at least 1-2 sl lenses if i have sl camera. 
 

I just dont like selling stuff (not good at it), thats why i wanted to learn long time experience. i have bought lux 75mm and noctilux 50mm before. They were great at first, after rental period i bought them by the way ( they are still great lenses, no issue about it) but then i started to use them less and less and sold them after 5-6 months, because i dont need them anymore, it was GAS effect. So i am little afraid that with sl lenses will be the same. Maybe not who knows.

I mostly use the 24-90 on my SL2.  I see no reason to duplicate my 28/35/50 M lenses for the SL system, as the M bodies are already perfectly suited (I stick with Summicrons and Summiluxes). For me, the SL system provides complementary uses: wider, longer focal lengths, zooms, or really bad weather (the M is also fine in light rain or snow, using common sense protections). Mostly these days, I use the M10 Monochrom, so everything else stays at home, including my M10-R.  These are personal matters; others have different needs, use cases, styles and preferences. Which is why I started by suggesting testing. Longer term, who knows. I’m too old for GAS nowadays; less is more.

Well. I don’t have the 90. So I can only speak for the 75mm which makes me smile every time I use it.  

sometimes I use a M 90mm summicron pre ASPH on the SL2-S. It’s a totally different story with its own beautiful rendering.

On paper, SL 90 APO is "better" than the SL 75 APO. In practice, all SL APO primes are stellar - choose them based on focal lengths you work with. I owned all of the "original" SL APOs - 35, 50, 75, 90. IMO, SL 90 is the crown jewel - this is my favorite focal length and there is something about the rendering of the APO 90 that has some secret magic going on.

90mm is one of my favourite trio's with 28mm and 50mm. Maybe i won't touch my 50mm summilux, beside 28mm i would like to give a try for 90mm as well. I never work with 75mm and dont like 35mm. 

It means that if i buy 28mm from my friend, i ll buy 90mm as well
