I saw that Thorsten Overgaard had a little gripe about the swivelling rear display of the Q3, correctly pointing out that it projects from the rear face of the camera and spoils the feel of the smooth lines of the Q2.

As an ex Q2 user I didn’t find this to be a problem and actually like to use the swivel screen for low level shots. But it’s true that it does poke out a bit and, I thought, warranted some protection. Accordingly the first thing I did was add a JJC glass screen protector.

I took the Q3 for its second outing on a walk-around holiday to Wharfedale. With the Q3 ready for use on a strap I was careful not to let it bang against any rocks. Even so I must have caught the edge of the screen on something because after the third day I noticed this splintered edge which developed into a crack.

Thankfully the screen protector had done its job and when I got home and carefully peeled it off there was not even a suspicion of a mark on the screen itself.

I agree!  I have used screen protectors on various cameras for years mainly as protection against scratches.  However, I had a camera (Ricoh GR III) in my jacket pocket and accidentally banged it against a metal chair frame when sitting down.  The impact shattered the upper third of the screen protector.  When I removed it later upon arriving home, the underlying screen was undamaged and still pristine.

I use the ACMAXX Hard LCD Screen Armor screen protectors.  They're hardened glass and a little expensive at $25 but I think they're among the best ones out there.

Don't know why, but I have no luck putting these things on without air bubbles.  I've tried everything.  Now I just take it up to the computer repair guy on the corner and have him do it.

The JJC protector is easy to apply without bubbles but you do have to be careful aligning it with the screen edges.

The Leica store in London put my screen protector on, even though I didn't buy the camera from them, just the screen protector, they offered to fit it whilst we enjoyed their coffee and browsed the gallery.

I have on both Leicas the Leica one, installed by the Leica Store, but fortunately never needed it till now,.
However, i use them from many years ago on my cell phones and there it saved the screen several times.
Yes i am a chicken even after many many times installing them and find aways a bubble or dust grain somewhere but just got used to it.
Some newer phone screen protectors have a hind of a housing to clamp over the phone and once installed the housing only the film need to be pulled of the adhesive side. I found that a good working solution, but not for camera or laptop screens.

For those having trouble keeping the screen protector aligned as it's being applied, try using a piece of painters tape as a hinge.

Lay the screen protector over the screen with the protective film which covers the adhesive still in place. Once it's aligned properly, attach a piece of tape along the entire length of one of the edges. Swing the protector up and away from the screen using the tape as a hinge. Dust everything off; remove the film; and swing the protector back down onto the screen. If you've done it right, the tape hinge will keep the protector aligned as you swing it back down into place.

Good luck!
