Capture One 4.0 and CornerFix

I see that Capture One V4.0 has been officially released. I installed it and then reviewed some of my images. One thing that I see is that the images processed thru CornerFix appear to be over saturated compared to the original DNG's. By the way... when processed thru Lightroom, all is well. I am using CornerFix 0.9.1.7 on a Mac running Leopard. Attached are four images. Image #1 Original DNG processed thru Capture One, Image #2 Corner Fix image processed thru Capture One, Image #3 Original DNG processed thru Lightroom, Image #4 CornerFix Image processed thru Lightroom. All images are at their defaults.

Anyone else seeing this?

One additional item, I had some images that were processed thru CornerFix 0.9.1.6 and see some additional behavior like the profile in Capture One being set to "NONE" rather than "Leica M8 Generic".

Jim,

Just looking at your images (I haven't got C1V4) It looks like C1V4 isn't picking up its M8 profile. C1 is different to most raw converters in that it ignores the color settings in the DNG, and loads it own profile depending on what it believes the camera to be.

Have you tied this with CornerFix set to "Level compression" enabled?

Hello Sandy!

Have you tied this with CornerFix set to "Level compression" enabled?

CaptureOne 4 (beta) accepts the non-level compressed DNG, but it ignores the WhiteLevel tag (so it is 'underexposed' by 2 f-stops). Is it possible, to either save the 14 bit values shifted to 16 bit values (and WhiteLevel to 65535 to be compatible to other RAW converters) or make it as an additional option to the existing 14 bit (WhiteLevel 16383) version?

In the last days, I have done a lot of pictures with my new ZM Distagon 4/18 in (extreme) low light environment. After CornerFix and 'Level Compression' there is a lot of annoying noise in the (corrected) corners due to pixel value granularity.

I have also detected additional (minor) noise and reduced sharpness after applying CornerFix which could be (sometimes significantly) reduced, if I use the same factors for 'color 1' and 'color 2' (the green pixels). Worth to think about?

Hi Harald,

Ok, downloaded the Mac version of C1 V4 and tried it out, and yes, you're right, V4 isn't reading uncompressed DNG's correctly.

So for the moment, for those C1 V4 users out there, the recommendation is still the same as for previous versions of C1 - in order to use CornerFix and C1 together, you must enable Level Compression in CornerFix. This is a bit disappointing. Phase One had promised that V4 would correctly read all DNGs. BTW, I can also confirm that V4 still has the "cache files" problem.......

Doing a shift on the data is quite possible; in fact that's what DMR2M8, CornerFix's cousin, does, although in the opposite direction. I'll have to check and whether (a) it works and (B) whether there are any nasty side effects.

As regards the noise in the corners, yes, that's because of the level compression; there just isn't much resolution in the dark parts of the image. I'll see what I can do to change file format to get C1 V4 working................

Thanks for the quick responses Sandy (as usual). Did not realize that this was also an issue on previous versions. I mainly use Lightroom, but use C1 on certain images. Guess I have not used on a CF image yet.

Harald, You may want to try a work-around to see if it works... Run an image thru CF and save to file w/o level compression. Then batch process all of your file through Adobe's DNG converter. It worked for me when there was the file size creep issue in 0.9.1.6 (now fixed... thanks Sandy)

Thank you for the advice, but I have written a tiny (20 line) C program, which does the shift (multiply by 4) in the DNG file. But it is an additional step...

A geek in our midst! Way to go! I used to be able to do things like that, and then I went into management...

Ok, I've played with this a bit, and it looks like I can work round the issue. Although it's going to take a "C1 V4 compatibility" setting in CornerFix, which is a pain(!). In essence it looks like Harald was right in his post - While C1 V4 will read a non-level compressed file, it ignores the DNG's white level setting, it looks like it assumes a that a flat DNG is a DMR file???

Anyway, I've hacked a version of CornerFix that I think works - now it will just take fully testing it, and adding the compatibility setting to the preferences...........assuming nothing unexpected comes up in testing, expect CornerFix 0.9.1.8 in a day or two's time.......
