Picked up a LH-6 hood and tried to spray it with a hammered finish. A bit disappointed because the paint wasn’t as textured as I hope and it’s too glossy. It was advertised as matte too. Anyways here’s the finish product.

It's not too bad. At least you now have your unique, (very) special edition hood.

Hopefully this is interesting to those of you that like the DIY steel rim for the v2. I'm looking forward to this "E39 Brass Rim" kit from Skyllaney Opto-Mechanics: https://www.instagram.com/p/C8utf3XoXGg/

  • permits use of e39 screw in filters with the v2
  • it's still compatible with the v2's standard hood and cap
  • made of brass

Honestly I can't figure out why Leica didn't make the v2 like this in the first place. I'm a little concerned it might have vignetting issues, but seems worth a try.

Interesting item.

I, too, have no idea why Leitz didn't design the v2 to accept 39mm filters; it's not as if there wasn't enough space in the inside the front rim to be threaded.

It could be, however, that there were vignetting issues with the 39mm mounting-ring in which case your concerns with the Skyllaney product might be well-founded.

On the other hand if the Skyllaney thing works well with no vignetting ic could be worth a punt. If it comes in Black and not that ridiculous (IMO) 'faux-brassed' look. Always assuming the price is reasonable for something which is essentially just a brass washer tapped with a thread and fitted with a few mounting-screws.

I reckon a reasonably able plumber could knock one out for under a Tenner...

I dug into the comments in their original Instagram post and they claim no vignetting problems.

I agree I would prefer it in black. Worst case I think I could paint it myself, but I’d prefer to see it anodized to match the lens.

They also claim the kit will ship with a screw driver and screws so it can be installed and removed easily.

Really? Hmmm......I'm not exactly convinced by their claim. Vignetting? Perhaps not but what about corner cut-off?

Just as an experiment I placed a Leitz 39mm UVa filter inside the rim of my v2 and took a test-pic (of the ceiling so the filter couldn't fall out!) with the lens set to f22. Here is the result;

As mentioned; this was with the filter sitting directly inside the rim of the lens. With a ring fitted into / onto this rim any filter screwed into it would, I imagine, sit further forward which means that the corner cut-off would be even greater.

I could, of course, be mistaken - and I hope that I am! - but I'd have to see results first-hand before I would believe that there is no issue.

I'm very glad I did this test; I discovered that my sensor is filthy and, to avoid hours of retouching, will need to be cleaned thoroughly before my next outing......😸......

I'm skeptical too, but hopeful. It's just an Instagram post vs a real product for sale so I'm treating it as such. It doesn't make sense to me why Leica wouldn't have done this if they thought they could. The v2 was around for decades. I guess we'll find out if they ever get enough demand to actually make the kit. I encourage everyone to email them and get on the waiting list.

Per an email with Omnar lenses, the first batch of the Skyllaney front rim kits should be available in October. I like the idea of being able to use an E39 filter threaded and the 12504 hood if desired; however, in the big pre-asph 35 Summilux thread @JMF has noted the original steel rim already vignettes with an E41 filter, so I’m skeptical an E39 will not.  I’m on the Omnar list, but also have an aftermarket E43 steel rim on the way (courtesy of @greenhilltony) which I will promptly paint black.

Looks like they are ready for sale: https://omnarlenses.com/product/omnar-brass-e39-brass-rim-kit-for-35mm-summilux-v2-lenses/

I'm skeptical about the vignetting, but I'm going to roll the dice. Everything I've read about this company is impressive so seems well worth the risk.

They are charging A LOT for that.

I received my adapter from @Greenhilltony and installed it. Screwing in the Leica UVaII filter in was a bit tight, but it's on now and not going anywhere.

Agreed it's expensive, but very limited production by a boutique UK company. I don't think they will have a problem selling out of the black versions at the current price. Glad to hear you like your DIY steel rim ring.

It sounds like there is two reasons there kit doesn't vignette: 1) they decrease the overall height of the lens to push the filter closer to the front element. 2) you have to use their recommended filter (Leica's) or a filter with a large enough diameter piece of glass so the metal rim of the filter doesn't cause vignetting. I'm hoping the B&W slim filter I have works, but I haven't measured it yet. They posted the filter spec requirements with the kit.

My guess is this kit (with the correct filter) is right on the very edge of vignetting. Hopefully it does't do it. I certainly bet some money on it so we'll see. Once I get the kit (and my lens back from DAG) I will do some testing.

After several talks with the seller, we happily established a collaboration. I put it on listing on eBay, and the item will be shipped directly from China. If anyone has trouble finding the correct link, feel free to DM me.

hi @Greenhilltony can you help to share the link for this ? I cannot find it in ebay now. Just got a this lens and I really really hate this hood, for me just a filter would be enough. But it is impossible with the original design
