mongrelnomad Posted December 16, 2007 Share #1 Posted December 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all... I've found myself using my M7 more and more recently (as my M8 spends more time on the shelf), but have found that in low-light situations, the dull viewfinder (it is an early camera) makes focusing extremely difficult. Has anyone done the upgrade with Leica? How long did it take, and how much was it? Thanks in advance, as the thought of being separated from the camera is slightly upsetting! Shootist Posted December 16, 2007 Share #2 Posted December 16, 2007 I think the upgrade on the M7 is free. Because of some type of defect in the early units, but I could be wrong. I do remember reading that the upgrade on the early M6's to the later finder of the M6 TTL and late model classic M6's did cost the owners.
mongrelnomad Posted December 16, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted December 16, 2007 Thanks. It's an upgrade I've been meaning to do for ages, but I just can't bear the thought of being without my M7 for that long (my M8 took spent nearly 3 months in Solms for misaligned frame-lines, and is now not getting on with my 90 Elmarit - another 'vacation' I'm avoiding)... But hey, if I could find a nice, black MP-3 kit for a decent price, I'm sure it'd cushion the blow
peter_n Posted December 16, 2007 Share #4 Posted December 16, 2007 I don't know where you're located, but I had mine replaced for free under a US Passport warranty. The camera was at the Leica New Jersey facility for about 8 weeks.

guywalder Posted December 17, 2007 Share #6 Posted December 17, 2007 unless I am mistaken, the upgrade reduces flaring, but doesnt make the finder generally brighter....
mongrelnomad Posted December 17, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted December 17, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is that true? If it is, then I'm really in no rush to do the upgrade. I've had the dreaded 'flare', but not too often. Usually, in that case, I'll simply move in the same plane to focus, or reconcile to losing the shot. atwood1202 Posted December 18, 2007 Share #8 Posted December 18, 2007 it just reduces flare. i brought up the same topic a couple of months ago.. i think someone told me that it would cost money i dont remember though not worth it was my final decision
fatfaria Posted December 21, 2007 Share #9 Posted December 21, 2007 I did upgrade my M6 TTL finder from the 0.72 to the 0.58 magnification finder of the MP( I wear glasses) and I had two routes. Leica Solms through Leica Distributor and I also got a quote from the Leica Camera Shop in Vienna. I chose the first one. Instead of chasing a 0.58 second hand I decided to do the swop of the viewfinder as I enjoy very much the M6 and I want to keep it as much as I possibly can. It's like the Patek P watches commercial, you do not own one it you simply take care of it for the next generation ( hoping that film lasts that much and that the next generation wears glasses!). The flare was gone but in very bright days the frame lines showed much better in the old M6 version (and a lot better still in my 1956 M3!).
