miatadan Posted August 22, 2024 Share #1  Posted August 22, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Waiting for the Leica SL-2S with the Leica 50mm f/2 ASPH to arrive. This is replacing a Leica X Vario that was stolen. Yes, there was a lot of hate for the X Vario but I really liked it. Should I expect a lot of difference besides just going APS-C to full frame? When I had full frame in the past , it was film slr's which always came with 50mm lenses. Compared to optical viewfinders in the past, will this Oled viewfinder be good? Advertisement Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Hi miatadan, Take a look here Just purchased Leica SL-2S with Leica Summicron 50mm f/2 ASPH, some questions.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LeicaR10 Posted August 22, 2024 Share #2  Posted August 22, 2024 (edited) Dan,  You will find the SL2-S to be exceptional if not stellar camera.  The camera excels in low light with its BSI sensor, excellent EVF and color rendering.  The camera is very stable and not prone to bugs or other issues.  IMO, Its one of the best Leica cameras made to date.  The full frame sensor will give you room to crop and very low noise too.  I do suggest when you get the SL2-S check the Camera Information feature in the menu for the firmware edition.  Leica moved the function of the back joystick to the thumb wheel with version 6.0 and those who use M lenses on the SL2-S lost the ability to magnify the using the joystick.  It might not be an issue if you do not have M lenses.  But for those of us who do use M lenses, Leica really made a some photographers mad hornets  Leica has promised to return the magnification function back to the joystick, but that was 8 months ago.  Crickets from Leica.  If your camera firmware is 5.0, 5.1 or 5.2, you will retain the joystick function.  I just picked up an extra SL2 and only upgraded firmware from 5.0 to 5.2.  In all regards, the SL2-S is a great camera and you will soon be creating masterpiece photographs.  r/ Mark Edited August 22, 2024 by LeicaR10
Chuck Albertson Posted August 22, 2024 Share #3 Â Posted August 22, 2024 You might like the SL2-S. The X sensors are really good, but the sensor of the SL2-S is much better, especially for low-light work. The eyepiece is fantastic, you'll quickly forget that you're looking at an electronic representation of the scene, and assume that you're looking through an optical viewfinder. They don't include a manual in the box, so go to Leica's download site and download a copy now, before your camera is delivered. You can also order a printed copy (no cost) on the same page. Might be a good idea to pick up a spare SCL-6 batt. In the past, availability of SL batts has been sporadic.
LocalHero1953 Posted August 22, 2024 Share #4  Posted August 22, 2024 If you never experienced focus enlargement with M lenses in the first place, you may find the current implementation suits your needs just fine. I occasionally use M lenses, and found the change with the new software preferable anyway. And if the lens you have bought is the SL version, not the M version, then the question is irrelevant! I find all EVFs to be not quite as immediate as an optical VF, but then EVFs bring advantages that an OVF does not have. Swings and roundabouts. It’s a long time since I looked through a SLR OVF, so my comparison is with the M OVF. However I think the SL2-S EVF is superb, and I don’t give the EVF vs OVF issue a moment’s thought.

Archiver Posted August 26, 2024 Share #6 Â Posted August 26, 2024 If your previous camera was the X Vario, you'll probably be blown away by the SL2S with Summicron 50 Asph. It is so much better in every way, other than size and weight. Just wait and see, you'll understand when you start to review the images and play with the raw files.
