dubois pierre Posted June 30, 2024 Share #1 Posted June 30, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone, recently I was interested in this lot offered at auction consisting of 3 bellows Kodaks and a Leica Ia. Obviously as you suppose my attention was focused on the Leica Ia type "Leanekalb". According to Hahne, only 180 examples of the calfskin Leicas were produced in 1930/31. This copy bears the number 47633, therefore from 1930. Nothing indicates a "Calfskin" version on the registers. But by studying it more closely everything indicates that it is an original. I had already observed this type of device at international auctions, the calfskin is consistent, the leather cuts are impeccable and present no defects (Screws, body contour). The slight traces of oxidation between the edges of the leather and certain elements indicate the age of this assembly. This Leica is accompanied by its case, a black "Fofer" rangefinder with its case and the lens protection capsule. Thank you for your feedback on this Leica. Pierre Welcome, dear visitor! PG Black nickel Posted June 30, 2024 Share #2 Posted June 30, 2024 Yes, for me Pierre is an original! By the way, I did bid but not enough...my budget was stretched by the purchase of a Dubroni number 2 and a Hanau pocket focal which are also very rare, so no regrets the person who won the auction got a bargain...2800€ excluding fees !!! PG Black nickel Posted June 30, 2024 Share #4 Posted June 30, 2024 Sorry I made you go up, but you're lucky I'd recently spent part of my budget on the 2 aforementioned devices, otherwise I'd have gone up higher !!!!

As for the Calf-Skin 'Leanekalb' you got a 'bargain' compared to the Collectiblend averages https://collectiblend.com/Cameras/Leitz/Leica-I-Mod-A-'Calfskin'-(Kalf-Leather,-bright).html At the 'No 105' Leitz Auction in 2022, Hollywood star Jason Momoa bought this one for €14,400 and we had a chat about it afterwards. His 'security' thought I was trying to approach him as a 'celebrity', but I was only talking to him as a fellow collector, which Jason confirmed. I had met him in the 'auction store' room the day before the auction. I was introduced to him by the Leitz staff, but I had to contact my two daughters and grandson to find out who he was. You should feel happy with your purchase. Yesterday I added No 1671 to my collection. I already own No 1661. I must look out for No 1681 😇 William

Thank you William, in fact the average cost is 19,000 euros depending on the state. The highest bid being 22,000 euros. There are always meetings and stories with our dear Leicas William. Collectiblend is not up to date some recent sales have not been recorded. It's true that these little Kodak "Art Deco" folding cameras are nice but they're not the ones that caught my attention😏.
Michal Kosakowski Posted July 2, 2024 Share #8 Posted July 2, 2024 Hi Pierre, I just checked with the Leica Archives and the camera is listed as Leanekalb. It was delivered to Tiranty, Paris on 12.09.1930. Congratulations! Interestingly, the original record in the delivery book is crossed out and a note 'nichtig' (void) is added later. Best, Michal 2

dubois pierre Posted July 26, 2024 Author Share #12 Posted July 26, 2024 Hello everyone, in accordance with the 1930/1931 catalog with the presentation of the "Etrin" case and its accessories for the Leicas I, here is the Leica Ia "Leanekalb" with its "Etrin" case and its original accessories (Viewfinder Winko and the double container (cardboard) for Filca cassettes. I was interested in this Luxury model designed in the Leitz workshops during the same period as the Leicas Luxus. We find among the "Leanekalb" cameras offered at international auctions two types (Ia and Ic). The vast majority being based on the Ia. Willy Hahne's list lists 180 of these cameras covered with calfskin. Like the Luxus Leitz offers according to the writings specific colors as an option with the color of the calfskin (green, blue, purple, brown (Light, dark and with checkered patterns). A price list from 1931 shows for a Leica Leane black the price of 220 Rm (Reischmarks), 230 Rm for a Leica Leanekalb and 400 Rm for a Leica Luxus. The customers of the time will undoubtedly have been more attracted by the more refined and flashy finish of the Leica Luxus. However today the Leica "Leanekalb" remains rare on the collector's market. The copies having remained in their original state are very difficult to find. The ravages of time, the climatic conditions and the relative fragility of the calfskin have often erased the original beauty of this leather. What fly bit the designers of Leitz to put such a coating on a Leica?. Moreover, a large number of them to the great despair of the users returned to the Leitz workshops to receive a coating of the "Vulcanite" type much more resistant. Which thus accentuates their rarity today. Certainly one of the craziest achievements of the time. Welcome, dear visitor!
