Given your use-cases (portraits and studio) I would lean toward the SL2-S. As has been mentioned, they are similar in many respects. I have both, and my preference is generally for the SL2, but I use mine almost exclusively for landscape photography where the added resolution helps.  The SL2-S is far more versatile for general use though and the lower resolution might be preferable for portrait work anyway.  As has been mentioned, you can always upscale with software when you need to...for that landscape photo you take while traveling.  The SL2-S also excels in low light, processes images fast and so has a faster burst rate. (also good for studio), and seems to focus more quickly with native lenses.  At least mine does.

I recently tried a friends sl2 with a Sigma 105mm macro and was blown away by the quality of that combo. If you prioritise outright image quality then it's difficult to look past the sl2, it was that good. I did not try that lens on the sl2s though so no direct comparison there. The camera at lower ISO sings and would be my choice if I was sure that the majority of my work would be controlled/low ISO or if I was printing larger than around a2.

FWIW, I went for the sl2s as I wanted an all in one option that does everything well. Better ISO, DR, speed etc. I also prefer vintage lenses over modern optics when shooting people and feel that lower resolution sensors give me a 'look' that I prefer over their higher resolution sisters.

I have two Nikons (D850 and 610) and my SL2 shoots just as well. I do wish the menu system were a little faster to use. But the optical quality makes up for everything. I shoot landscapes and people. Shooting in lower light depends on the base aperture of the lens.

I have just ordered an SL2, it was hard to make the decision, even with such good advice on this forum. Thank you one and all. 

In the end, I could have gone with either camera and adjusted my workflow as needed. 

It is a testament that Leica could put out two such similar yet different cameras in the same body.
