'Second Shot', an adaptation of 'A Report to an Academy', a story by Franz Kafka. 

Recorded on the Blackmagic CC6K (static, wide angle camera, 24-90SL) and SL2-S (tripod mounted with 90-280SL, and hand-held with Apo-Summicron-SL 75). The sound was recorded on a Zoom H4n. It was shot in two complete performances, the first with the two cameras fixed, one wide, the other long, and the second with handheld close ups. The prologue was shot separately, again in two separate performances, although only the second was used.

It's a collaboration between Andrew Stephen, who adapted the story and gave the virtuoso performance, myself as camera operator and editor, and a lighting tech.

This is my first attempt at a video that is more than just a point and shoot static recording. There is a LOT of uneducated trial and error here!

Thank you! I had intended to use the Apo 35 SL (easier for a rookie operator to frame the subject), but Andrew wanted as close up as I could get. Obviously there was quite a bit where I lost him in the frame, and I couldn't keep him in focus, but we both agreed the erratic movement in and out of focus added rather than detracted from the uneasy atmosphere. I set fixed focus at about 2m, and watched the rear screen for the glint of light in his eyes to tell if I had the distance right.

What I am most proud of is holding the camera and gimbal continuously for 40 minutes 💪.
