Maybe it would be a better lens if it was f4 or f2.8-f4 rather than f2-f2.8 , that might enable it to be smaller and possibly improve its performance.

I 100-percent agree with your statement. I wouldn't have any issue if the lens was a 2.8-4 or even 3.5-4 if that meant a significant reduction in weight and size.

Reviving this old thread as this lens is getting discounted now just under the 1000k Euro mark and looks quite a decent performer optically (if you get a good copy, that is). I'm just wondering what's the status of the AF performance of this lens on SL bodies, is it at least accurate/reliable in AFs? Does it even work remotely decently in AFc with at least slow moving targets?

I'm ready for the weight, lens creep, less than optimal corners (but a sharp center/midframe as in theory this lens should be capable of), but an imprecise AF can ruin a lot of shots and lead to big frustrations, so I'd rather skip it completely if things are still as they were one year ago or so, based on the users' experience that I've found (not that many in L mount sadly).

I just gave it another try a couple of weeks back. Not impressed with AF or sharpness. Maybe I had two bad copies. If the price keeps going down, I might pick one up anyways, since the images weren't completly useless, it was just obvious that AF was a tiny bit off most of the times (Moving subjects, AF-S, no such problems with other lenses. AF-C was worse.) The focal range is the real selling point for me.

Thank you very much, what you are telling is definitely less than encouraging, I'm getting the impression from what I read/see that "the optics are there" (at least in the center part of the image, always considering that is zoom lens), but that a lot of pics comes out just a tad misfocused and that leads to the "lens is soft" impression. Looks like a missed opportunity for us L shooters, and it's sad that we cannot get ahold of the Tamron version, which seems much more reliable in that regard. So it will be either "buy and in case return" for me or I'll just look elsewhere, although the only one that is somewhat similar is the Sigma 28-105 F2.8 but it's almost 500 quid more expensive at the moment and I'm still not completely sure if it's worth such price.

My guess is that we may need a MkII version of this lens to be designed and released, a design that remedies the bugs that exist in this first version, maybe make the lens a f2.8-f4 or fixed f3.5 which would help reduce size and weight, this could improve focusing as there would be less glass to move around, if this were done then the lens may be more appealing, I do like the focal range.

I do too, for my usage would definitely be more useful than a traditional 24-70 F2.8, I tend to shoot much more candid portraits at the longer ends for sure and for wider snapshots usually I always have my trusty Ricoh GR III in my pocket, which is an extremely capable little camera indeed 🙂

Maybe at the end will give a shot at this Sammy and in case return it if I really find the AF too inconsistent for my tastes, for the time being I've ordered a 7artisans 85 F1.8 as stopgap, it looks like a very competent lens for the really low price it's being sold.

Hi, I posted in the other thread before seeing yours, I was also seriously considering this lens because I love the range and the maximum aperture (and even myself for the time being I'm covering this with the excellent but obviously bulky and adapter EF 70-200 F2.8 IS II), but your experience (together with numerous ones I've gathered) is quite disheartening, it really looks that there is something off with this lens in terms of focus accuracy, even in AFs, which at the end ruins the show. Which is a pity because the optics look definitely good enough (at least for me), when the AF nails, that is..

UPDATE: After returning the first 35-150 lens, I ordered another one and tried out a few images. The second one does not appear to have the issues I had with the first one: noisy autofocus and intermittent creaking noise at the rear lens barrel. I suspect I had a faulty copy. The latest version seems more solid and none of the issues I had before.

I really enjoy having the range and the the fast aperture. The quality of the images I would say are above average but I will be test shooting some more to verify my initial reactions.

Went to a nearby park and made this image of the wooden structure of a pagoda with the latest 35-150.

I went out to try some additional photography last night. Made this image of a street violinist performing. Shot the lens wide open: f2 @ 1/160th, iso 4000.
