isunshine Posted April 26, 2024 Share #1 Posted April 26, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a Leica I A with Elmax (1925) and its original shutter requires a replacement (leaks light a little) to stay fully functional. If I replace the shutter, will it bring down the value of the camera since it won't be original anymore? What counts more in terms of keeping it more valuable between originality vs. functionality. Alternatively, I have another I A but with Elmar from 1927 and I'm thinking maybe I should replace it with its shutter, if it affects the value negatively. Is this a good idea? I care Elmax a lot more than Elmar, of course, and want to keep it as pristine as possible, even though I don't use it much.

dubois pierre Posted April 26, 2024 Share #2 Posted April 26, 2024 Hello Isunshine photo of your Ia with the Elmax would be welcome and its serial number. For the rest, if you want to use one of your old Leicas and have it serviced, preferably use the second one with the Elmar.

Ottmar Michael serviced 0 Series No 105 and it sold for over 14 million Euros, so, I don't think you need to worry about the shutter. The things that usually detract from value are cosmetic things like repaints and changing external controls. Ottmar told me that No 105 had the wind knob changed many years ago to take FILCA cassettes as the original cassettes for the 0 Series were not readily available. The original cassettes looked like this one which came with No 121 . Welcome, dear visitor!
