DreiPunkte Posted April 23, 2024 Share #1 Â Posted April 23, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) My question ist will a collapsible be transported collapsed or at full length? And will there be special rear lenscaps? Iam just waiting for an Elmar 50mm 2.8 and the question pops on how to store the lens in my bag. Thanks for any advise

Having just checked the 50mm f2.8 Elmar in M mount has a tube which, when collapsed, projects 20mm from the rear surface of the lens-mount. The standard Leica rear cap (14379) only has an internal depth of 14.5mm so the lens, if collapsed, will not collapse fully. On the other hand the rear cap which I have for my 21mm f4.0 Super-Angulon has an internal depth of 27mm so the Elmar can be collapsed fully with this style of cap. One other factor to consider however; when the regular rear cap is used and the Elmar is collapsed as far as it will go then, with front cap fitted, the overall size is 45mm. With the 'deep' rear cap fitted the size (again with front cap) is 51mm so the most compact solution would be to use a regular rear cap and carry the lens collapsed. My preferred method (FWIW) is the latter mentioned. Philip. Edited April 23, 2024 by pippy
DreiPunkte Posted April 23, 2024 Author Share #3 Â Posted April 23, 2024 Thanks Collapsed with the regular rear cap sounds like the best way.
spydrxx Posted April 23, 2024 Share #4  Posted April 23, 2024 It is nice to have a deep rear lens cap when needed. I got a couple from Ebay a few years ago, and use them as desired. As for transporting your lens, any Leica M cap will do. BTW, it is not a good idea to store any lens in a bag....darkness and trapped moisture are invitations for fungus spores to multiply. Best to store lenses in relatively low humidity environment with free air circulation or another good alternative is a tight box with a silica gel bag.
DreiPunkte Posted April 23, 2024 Author Share #5 Â Posted April 23, 2024 Thanks for the advise. Some of my lenses have been living on shelves for 40 years. They can then take a trip in their bag for work. I am of the opinion that dust is what lenses and cameras fear least. When the job is done everything gets a check and if nessesary a small CLA. The large format equipment is particularly grateful for this, the small stuff too.
