WillieM Posted April 22, 2024 Author Share #3 Posted April 22, 2024 I set to macro. I use manual focus. I see macro image in EVF. I press shutter release and the image i get is not the macro image i viewed. I took a photo of label on wine bottle. The macro image was of the label, but the photo was of the entire wine bottle. I could increase magnification of the image using top wheel and could isolate the label, but I did not get a photo of just the label.
maikellermann Posted April 22, 2024 Share #4 Posted April 22, 2024 In manual focus mode, the "macro" view is only a preview for better focusing not a preview of the image that will be shot.
jps1 Posted April 22, 2024 Share #5 Posted April 22, 2024 It's normal, the macro shot simply allows you to get closer to 17 cm. The complete image always remains that of a 28 mm. Guest Posted April 22, 2024 Share #6 Posted April 22, 2024 There are two things happening here. When you move the lens to Macro mode it just allows you to focus closer, and has been pointed out, you still get a 28mm full frame image captured. Try it in AF not MF and you'll see this. However, if you use MF in Macro mode (or non Macro) the Q3 will go into "focus peaking" mode that magnifies the image in the Viewfinder. This is just to let you focus more accurately. The captured image is still the full frame, close focus, image and not the magnified image that you are seeing in the VF.
WillieM Posted April 22, 2024 Author Share #7 Posted April 22, 2024 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) All of your responses are well appreciated. I do fully now understand. I was a bit confused since I am viewing wonderful micro photos posted by members not realizing that the fine real up close renderings that are being presented, I assume, are pp. Edited April 22, 2024 by WillieM

The Macro function allows you to get very very close to your subject to get as much a closeup as you can get with an 28 mm lense. Try it with AF so that the focus peaking magnification does not set in (or shut if off in the menue), than you see what the Macro function can do for you. In the beginning I thought this is just a gimmick that I will not use despite me loving macro photography, but it really works fine. I did plant pictures in parallel with my Nikon Macro setup and the Q3 and I have to say, the Q3 is doing very very well, there was not really more cropping and photoshopping necessary than for the Nikon.
