Hello - recently got an R9 with motor winder, which came in the original boxes in mint condition. The winder loads the film, advances and does continuous shots of the shutter is held down - works perfectly. But: for the life of me, I can’t get it to rewind a roll when it’s finished. doesn’t do it automatically, doesn’t do it when I slide the R button to the right on the back - it did not come with the original manual,  so I am wondering if I just don’t know how to use the winder properly. I’ve been manually rewinding the film.

Can someone enlighten me as to how to get the R8/9 winder to rewind? Thank you!

"If the photographer does not want to use the rewind crank, he can activate the motor rewind process by means of a slide switch conveniently located for thumb operation in the centre rear of the winder."

Yep, I have the above doc and read that and tried it. Nothing happens. I tried pushing the rewind button and then the slide, nothing happens. Note what you posted says nothing about pushing the rewind button.

Thats why I am hoping someone who has the winder and uses it can explain how it is supposed to work. The documentation is vague and as such I don’t know if I’m missing a step.

I am sure that you will need to push the rewind button to disengage the wind on mechanism, which is what you'd have to do if you were using the rewind crank in any case. Sliding the button on the winder will, most likely, just reverse the gears so that the film winds back instead of forwards.

You can try it without any film in the camera, of course.

I’ll give it a try. Thanks Andy!

Is that a required step prior to sliding the rewind button to the right?

Yes.  I'm talking about the small button to the right of the film advance lever on the top of the camera body.

You need to press this in if you want to rewind the film – either by hand using the LHS rewind crank or via the winder. In the latter case you also need to slide the switch on the winder to "R".

The clutch disengage button on the camera is also used if you want to do multiple exposures (remember them?)
