Greetings All

I have an SL2  body and a new 90-280 Leica zoom lens

Having consulted a few travel insurance companies in Australia, I seem to be limited to a max of 5k AUD insurance for both camera and lens combined.

Off to a few countries in Africa in July, so I am mindful of potential loss.

Would any members, especially those Australians that have travelled overseas with their equipment, know of a travel insurance company that allows for a higher level of photographic equipment cover?

Appreciate any feedback

Thanks

Selwyn

Sel,

First welcome to the forum.  Second, Although I live on the Gold Coast part year, my camera insurance is based out of the US under my business insurance for global coverage. So I cannot answer your question directly for Australia.  I suggest you call the Leica Store in Sydney or Melbourne and ask the store manager if any of the pros they deal with, mention their insurance companies.  You might get some of the pros here to chime in soon.  r/ Mark

PS  You might want to post your same question in the Leica SL System thread vs the S camera thread.  You might get more replies.

I have always insured my M10 under a policy entitled "Photographers Combined Insurance" from PSC Insurance, and have included their contact details below.  The policy is marketed for professionals, but amateurs are covered, they just can't access the professional elements (reshoots/studio etc).  It covers all loss or damage during local and worldwide travel, shipment and usage for Australian domiciled owners.  My policy has a general excess of $250, plus an extra excess for theft from locked car.  There is no limitation on the duration of international cover during the 12 month coverage period. While the policy isn't cheap, having it allows me to always carry a camera without worrying.  After all, a photographer without a camera is just a pedestrian.

The person I deal with is Cody Mahon.

Attached below is their PDS (old but a guide)

Current cost (2023) for 12 months coverage for my M10-R plus leica lenses cost $630, for replacement coverage (new replacement) totalling $21,000.

I hope you find this useful.  Cheers Patrick

Don’t know about Australia, but some US insurance companies provide separate riders to home coverage, sometimes in the form of collections policies, which allow for individual item protection.  Mine covers all circumstances outside warranty, worldwide and without deductible, not just when traveling. You might check if there are any similar options for you.

We go through a broker (originally a local firm which, by several successive buy-outs, is now Howden) and our current insurance is with Covea, which is house, contents and valuables insurance, including a specified sum for photographic stuff - covers travel, including theft from cars as long as it is out of sight. They have allowed for occasional variations, such as the time I did casual paid work, and the time when I let the public into the house as part of an open studios scheme.
