Personally I think there's something in this. I've got an M11M which has mostly had a screen protector on. It's about 5 weeks old. I went to Norway without a screen protector and at home I notice a scratch on the screen which I can feel with a finger nail. I have an M11P which is 7 months old and a sapphire watch which is 3 years old and neither have any scratches. During the two week trip the camera was in a Billingham bag and went nowhere near rocks/sand/metal/etc. I'm really careful with my cameras.

Interesting that these accounts are all M11 monochrom.

I suspect they have changed the grade of the sapphire glass (cheaper?) and the new is simply not as scratch resistant. I do not think the camera fits sold as described.

Mine is going back for assessment.

Put a screen protector on all your cameras. A seller can advertise sapphire but there are many different ways to mix those materials so that not all sapphire glass is equal. It could have a bit of sapphire and they can still say it's a sapphire scratch resistant screen.

A screen protector is such a non issue. The only mistake was taking it off. Leave them on all the time. Issue fixed.

Watch this before you are too excited when Leica or any other company says the word Sapphire

Keep in mind these 2 products are advertised as having sapphire glass.

My superpower: I can scratch any sapphire screen (watches, cameras, etc.).
Sapphire is scratch resistant, but it is no way scratch proof.

GOLD STANDARD SAYING:

"scratch resistant, but it is no way scratch proof."

just like:

"Weather Resistant, not weather proof"

"Weather sealed, not weather proof"

"Lifetime membership / warranty. Who or what's lifetime?"

Surely cameras are supposed to be used out in the field to take photographs? I've never put a screen protector on any camera I've used.

Here's a snap of the back screens of my Canon EOS-1DX, and my Leica M9 Monochrom.

Both cameras have been in constant use since 2012. The 1DX has been used hard, and in all weathers. The guy who had it before me would regularly take it out to sea to photograph yachting events. I had it serviced after I got it, and it came back with a note saying there was corrosion on the chassis, and over 100K clicks on the shutter, and it was only two years old at the time. I don't know what the screen cover is made of, but it's not sapphire, it's likely some sort of dense plastic or Gorilla Glass. It has a lot of fine scratches on the surface, but they make zero difference, when reviewing pictures.

The M9 Monochrom has been used a fair bit too. It has a sapphire screen and, seriously, there's not a mark on it. It clearly resists scratches very effectively.

For good measure, there's my four-year-old Ricoh GR3. The instruction manual warns that the screen surface is soft and easily scratched, but I've had that camera in and out of my pocket countless times, and it's only picked up a single scratch.

That's the point, my M11P is very scratch resistant but it seems the M11M has plastic levels of resistance. I think there has been a material substitution here and that's not on! If a product for £8300 says it has an enhanced scratch resistant sapphire screen it really should do!
