All makes sense now.  My hood is the # 12524 which had no cap when I bought the lens in 1997 (second hand).  I just assumed the seller had lost it (since the hood has the ridges for a cap) and years later bought one second hand I thought was a replacement (and then lost it).  That cap probably was the one for the 35mm ASPH hood (12526) and the replacement I recently bought (from the auction site, in the nice silver box) is the exact replacement of my lost cap, of which neither were made for my hood.  Oh well. Glad that the Match Technical rubber cap works very well.
