msendin Posted November 23, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Not that I have three! Beeing an M user since long ago I went for the M8 last september. The first one after short time developed some dead leds in the viewfinder...the 8 looked like a 3 and so on. My dealer changed it for a second one. I took arround 1000 shots with it at low ISO and everything was perfect. One day I shooted plenty of interiors at ISO 1250 and observed the famous purple vertical line near the left border. I inspected previous shots and the line was allways there, although very faint at low ISO. My dealer has changed the camera once more. Conclussion: My dealer is great but .... does Leica has a problem? For a brand famous for its high quality of manufacturing I am a bit surprised. I may have been very unlucky but I read in the forum similar stories. I am not trying to criticize the M8 itself as I think it is great, but so many failures are a bit illogical after one year of manufacturing experience. By the way the first two M8 where black and this third one silver (both are nice for me) so if this one works OK I will conclude silver are better than black......obvious! My dealer has also told me he is observing more problems in new cameras in the last months than at the begining of the M8 distribution. Perhaps too soon to be conclusive but a possible hint. Sorry for this lament, I just wanted to share it.

marknorton Posted November 23, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 23, 2007 With this sort of stuff still happening, it isn't any surprise that Leica do not wish to change the camera functionality. Doing so might not increase the level of field problems but it certainly would not reduce them. As for the specific problems you had, you can also point a finger at Kodak who should not be shipping faulty sensors in the first place. Mind you, Leica QA should pick it up and if the camera quality is getting worse not better, that's a concern as well.
chris_tribble Posted November 23, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 23, 2007 Sorry you've had problems . I have two M8s, my clients are happy, I'm happy. I get paid, my clients get images. I do personal projects too. I still have the 5D and the 1D2. Used the 1D2 ONCE in the last 12 months. Used the 5D a dozen times - mostly because I needed to use the 70-200 and I still love the 85 1.2. It's a drag that people have problems with the camera - but we have to remember that a lot of us don't. Best
