ibogost Posted November 23, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have two unused Leica lens coding coupons. The duration for this seems to have been extended indefinitely. I have three lenses in my kit, a 28 Elmarit, 50 Summicron, and 90 Elmarit. The 28 is coded, the others are not. Leica's been pretty brutal about making these non-transferrable, so I can't sell or even give them away. And I can't think of any benefit I'd get from coding the 50 or 90. And I don't plan on buying any more Leica glass anytime soon, since I feel pretty well covered with what I have. I do still have to send my body in for a sensor fix (that damn dead pixel line at high ISO), but I've been putting that off until after the holidays. I guess I could just send everything in then. But then I couldn't use those lenses on a film body during the time I'd have to wait either. Anyway, any thoughts or advice?
Advertisement Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 Hi ibogost, Take a look here What to do with coding coupons?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Venkman Posted November 23, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 23, 2007 Coding your 50 and 90 would improve their resale value. Also, I think you'll have the lense info in your EXIF (not sure if that is correct). So, basically, since it does no harm, the only question is: can you part with them for a long period of time? Oh, I just read that you need to send off the body anyway, so I would check with Leica if they can make sure that all of them get back together and do it. I also still have the dead pixel row, which I still haven't fixed, although my turnround time would be significantly shorter.

ibogost Posted November 23, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted November 23, 2007 Coding your 50 and 90 would improve their resale value. Also, I think you'll have the lense info in your EXIF (not sure if that is correct). So, basically, since it does no harm, the only question is: can you part with them for a long period of time? Yeah, I thought of this too. And resale value might be reason enough. I guess I'd feel more motivated by it if I thought my images would improve. You're right that it will record the focal length in the EXIF, but really that's not super motivating. MJones Posted November 23, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 23, 2007 Just sent 2 lenses in under a coupon voucher - looks like new flanges installed with the coding (not just engraving the existing flange) - also, looks like they cleaned the lenses a bit. 2 of the 3 I sent did not have to go to Germany and were coded and returned all under 3 weeks. Shootist Posted November 23, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 23, 2007 Yeah, I thought of this too. And resale value might be reason enough. I guess I'd feel more motivated by it if I thought my images would improve. You're right that it will record the focal length in the EXIF, but really that's not super motivating. I think the best reason is so the FL of the lens shows up in the EXIF data. Not sure about anyone else but I can't remember which lens I used for what shot. No I'm not big on record keeping when I'm out shooting. Also then you can set the camera to Lens detect+IR and forget about it.
