Instead of asking the Waiter to fiddle with the Q3, I figure better just buy a Tripod and use LEICA FOTOS APP to take pictures etc.

Is JOBY still the clear choice for something portable or has the world moved on from this?!

platypod with handle - a little more costly but way more stable

Will get the extreme even though the Ultra more than meets the specs of our Camera.

You may want to take a look at the classic Leica Tabletop Tripod:

http://jeffmellody.com/blog/2014/4/21/leica-table-top-tripod-review

They've been making this for ever with small variations, so you don't need to pay current prices. The legs can still be found for £50-60 GBP, and the heads for about the same, or a bit less. You don't have to get the tall head shown in the above link, which was designed to allow an M (or screwmount) camera with the tripod socket at one end of the base plate to be mounted in portrait mode, though the length is handy if you want to use it as a chest pod. Leica made shorter heads too, and standard third party heads will fit. Because of the unusual design with legs that rotate into place instead of unfolding, this may be the most solid tabletop tripod ever made. You can't adjust the height, though, except by changing the head.

That thing is surprisingly heavy, which can be a pro or a con. The last head I purchased has a rough movement; my two previous ones were perfectly smooth - watch out for sample variation.

The Platypod can be useful (I have several, including use as a base for flashes). I'm using it less than I had expected, less than 10% of my tripod/monopod/... applications. It does excel in portability and for the purpose of 'tripod police avoidance', as stated. Also nice for ground-level and tabletop applications.

All my gorilla pods broke after a couple of uses. The joints loose tension, and the whole thing will then simply not bear any load and has to be discarded.

I have a Q2 and used to have a Gorillapod. however I switched to the Gitzo Mini Traveler Tripod. This is a) not cheap, but b) a superb bit of kit. It is so stable and well built. Thoroughly recommended and one of my favourite accessories.

For your apparent needs I would suggest the Gitzo. Note the link is to the UK site

I tried two of those and on each the head would not lock properly using my Q2 at a tilt and so were returned. They do get some good reviews but based on my two samples I question the build quality consistency .

I have the Leica tabletop tripod with the long head. It’s a great bit of kit but the shape of the legs mean it’s a real pain to fit into a camera bag. I’ve heard great things about Leofoto mini tripods but decided not to buy one because my new Heipi tripod has a built-in mini tripod.

When in doubt though, just buy Gitzo.

For all purpose light duty from relatively big to small I still favor the PD carbon fiber tripod.  I typically use it without the center column so it can go really low.

For when I am purely using it as a tabletop tripod I like the Benro.

I have a couple of Gorillapods but mostly use them for lights and iPad / iPhone these days.

I bought the Gitzo Mini Traveller Tripod (GKTBB) to use with my Q3.

Mine is rock steady - also with cameras and lenses a lot heavier than the Q2. So it must have been just your luck, or their QC broke down.
